Hey fellas . Just heard from a fellow bueller... she had a local mechanic change the oil in her 03 Xb9s and they said they found very fine brass fillings in the oil. What would cause this?

Or instead of passing on the problem to an unsuspecting Bueller, have the "mechanic" cut open the old oil filter and see whats up. Tiny (fine, sand like) particles are ok, big chunks are a problem...

What's the mileage? Good maintenance otherwise? Does she ride it everyday? No knocks? No weird noises? runs ok? I'd run it, and check what's in the oil often.

Maybe the "mechanic" doesn't know crap? Maybe he/she's wrong?

She picked the bike up at least 2 years ago for $2800 14000 miles it's in great shape and runs great... how terminal is this? Should she run it till it comes apart or should it get gone through before it does more damage?

I'd find a spare motor anyway, even a rookie can do complete motor swap in a day with just a few tools and some brain cells.

It would be $1500+ by the time you pay parts & labor ($50-150/hr) 8hr

I would run the motor till it starts knocking, then part it out. Top end of buell XB motor 03-07 is worth about $800. You can buy used motors for about $1000-1300 from reliable people

I don't recomend rebuilds because typically something doesn't get back together the correct way. Solve one problem, create another

Just a thought here. She had the shifter lever fall off last week 40 miles from home. No doubt clutching and dogging it right down being in 4th gear . Could it be from that? Something from the clutches ?

What oil? The clutch/primary and transmission share oil. The engine oil is separate. There will be more particles in the trans oil from the clutch wear.

{The clutch/primary and transmission share oil.The engine oil is separate}

Correct me if I am wrong but the clutch/primary, are separate from the transmission/engine oil,
so the brass could be the oil pump drive or shifting forks? There are only so many brass parts in the engine.
I think fine particles are normal, but chunks and pieces would not be.

She says the mechanic said engine oil... I was kinda thinking he may have changed both then noticed . Told her to put a couple judged miles on it and change the oil again to see how much glitter is in it.

Thanks again guys for the advice[up]
