i just recently bought an 09 xb12r with the cel lite on. the bike only has 2700 miles on it and no aftermarket parts. it seems to be running rich and has a little bit of sputter at take off. where would I find the plug to check the codes and how would I go about it.

ecmspy being purchased for your 2009 works well as does tunerpro rt which is free. both have run-diagnostics capabilities. you can also do it yourself by using the below link. works like a champ.
i am betting you'll either get a low voltage code or spark plug related code....just a hunch but fairly common. if the bike has been started and stopped alot without being ridden much distance(your odometer seems to indicate that possibility) i would start by fully charging the battery and checking cable-to-terminal connections, then going with a plug swap to NGK DCPR9EIX iridium tipped.

i have the same problem i think i just bought a 03 xb9s has 8273 miles sat with a dead battery/i put a new battery in put a new set of DCPR8EIX plugs and i still have a fault code 16-low voltage battery is fully charged/and a code 24and 25 front and rear coil/it fires right up no check light till it runs a few minutes. have any ideas? it sat a while and i havent been able to ride it yet im in ny. i was told the 2nd owner put the 273 miles in 2yrs.

^^^^^^ sandman: DCPR8EIX is a tad hot in heat range for most climates that an XB is operated in. 9 is one range cooler. did you retrieve your codes via ecmspy or by using the pin and plug method i outlined? if ecmspy just clear them out and see what you have. code 16 can be historically stored from a one-time dead battery or loss of charging voltage to same. check your charging output. code 24 and 25 typically associated with a faulty coil...faulty plug wires...or both.

lunaticfringe/you as always were correct/the bike according to a google search at autozone said it took a 8 heat range well running over 105 octane and hear a ping that was it for me dropped doen to a 9 as you indicated did the mentioned ecm swap and is running good i did a timing check using the spy and if i did it right the bike is fine./the other day i reset the tps and i did a running test why would in the history have 2 codes for the injectors open to ground but i dont have a check engine lite on CEL you know what i mean.you ever have that?the ecm had i think 1500 miles on it?any ideas? thank you

not sure. not presently looking at the chart but typically codes 23 and i believe 24 are injector faults.....short to ground. this seems to be consistent with a "rub-thru" or problem with wiring harness above the engine area or in the V area of the engine. perhaps this happened, codes were stored, CEL momentarily activated, and you didn't see it illuminate? not sure if something intermittent like that would have kept the CEL constantly illuminated.

i dont have any check engine light.i checked the wiring everywhere that i could/and nothing weird at all and i did a full harness check when i had the very first problem./i think its just this bike/nothing is cut and dry/i worked on 1000s of screwed up cars and trucks/i have never encountered what my buell does./here is something i dont understand with the tps reset maybe you can share your knowledge ok got the laptop pluged in to the buell ignition switch is off/i pull up the ecmspy program with the gauges on it and my tps is off both settings/so i turn the throttle down to 0 degress and percent and 2 full turns./then i do the whole reset procedure and they say "tick it over" and adjust idle/but when you adjust the idle them i recheck the tps position it is wrong its up to like 5.6 percent and degres is off also. so now when i reset the tps tothe 4.6 and 5.1 i shut the key off log out of program and unplug lap top.and i now DONOT touch the idle screw/it then idles at 1000 and i leave it and it seems to have way better accileration.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ here's how it works:
1-key to on position....red run switch to on position....blip throttle to ascertain ecm and computer device communicating with one another.
2-do your tps reset procedure. i prefer value 5.1 as the reset value but just personal preference.
3-turn off both key switch and red run switch. disconnect cable from bike.
4-turn on key switch.....let needles sweep.....turn on red-run switch....allow sufficient time for CEL to set up and then extinguish itself. now start bike. get a bit of heat in the motor manually adjust the idle speed thumb-wheel to approx. 1000-1100rpm. done. finished. finito. AT THIS POINT if you would reconnect to ecmspy( not necessary or required)and now check tps value it is going to be different that it was at step #2 above. this is normal.
