I keep hearing this clicking sound on acceleration.. its when I just blip the throttle a little or even when just cruising

A bunch of folks have posted about this in the past (assuming that were talking about the same sound). Ive only had my 07 12R since May of 11 and have run across this topic on this forum and others several times. Mine makes the same pinging noise but only under hard acceleration. Interestingly enough, and I've posted about this before, I used to drive a 94 ford ranger that made a nearly identical pinging noise under hard acceleration. It almost sounds like a few quarters bouncing around in the dryer and, based on my experience, the noise is rather inconsistent with the engine speed. In other words the 'pings' do not increase or decrease with revs. I've never really heard a good explanation for what causes it. I've assumed that it may be the lifters but that wouldn't explain the fact that the noise doesn't change with engine speed. I will say that the truck did it the entire time I owned it. I sold it with about 170K on the clock of which I put about 120K on it - again, it did it the entire time I owned it and never caused any issues so I'm not too worried about the bike.

Both mine do it. Im putting together a third buell this winter, a salvage xb9sx. I'm using new cams, pushrods, lifters, pistons, a zippers oil pump and clutch hoping one of these cures the UN rhythmic clicking. When I'd brought the sx and rode it around all road rashed I noticed the clicking with every low rpm full throttle pull. After riding that bike it infected my ears and I started hearing on my 9r every now and then. I was leaning toward lifters til I got the 12scg and it didn't click till the middle of the 105° summer now it wont do it. The 9r motor still does it even with race gas when its more than 75°. Maybe the 9's just have too much compression and are prone to immaterial detonation. To the eye I can't see any face defects to the old 9sx pistons I'm replacing

I also made a post about this. I just think its the nature of our engines. It is distressing to hear though. But i have almost 20k on mine and it still runs like a champ so im not worried :)

Been riding XLs since the late 70s, pinging under heavy throttle means poor gas..sometimes timing on older bikes..
clatter at constant speed is just the mechanical noise, cam, lifter, pushrod, valvegear action...
worried about it in the beginning, seemed to get worse while under the influence....
like stated before , its the nature of the beast...

Keep in mind these engines also have gear driven cams, not cams driven by timing chains. Gear to gear is noisy.

Also, these engines are air cooled, having no water jackets(which absorb noise).

Wha?  "These engines are air cooled?"  Which engines?  The Rotax in our CR is not air-cooled.

my bad.......I still think everyone on this site has an xb.... :(

I retract my last statement [down]

FAIL

Sean we're gonna have to make a checklist thread for you to go over before posting. Google, Read title, Etc....

:D

And to your defense the title is only right above the first post.

Just busting your balls Sean

We all know your lack in attention to detail, hell you ride around with an upside down has cap.

:D

Yeah once I click the thread on the main page I never even notice the title at the top. Oh well. I've been not riding too long....don't know what's going on...

Ah sh*t... Negative rep for me. Though i have heard if the 1125 is clicking under accel its about to grenade. :D
