Last couple rides I've been noticing an odd smell of something burning...smells kinda like wires or something. This morning I was like "what IS that?!" and I found the culprit--the rubber accordian boot that covers the clutch line was smoldering...basically burning, and definately smoking. Has this been happening to anyone else?? The thing sits close to the exhaust header, was it always just doomed to burn? Next question: how bad is it Doc?

here's a pic of where the accordian boot cover is burning up

yep kinda common if the bracket gets deformed or broken. You need to replace it and make sure you route the clutch cable to prevent it from happening again or there is a possibility of water running down the clutch cable into the primary. I employed some zip ties on mine.

so just zip tie it away from the header a bit? Its difficult to see the accordian boot in the pic, but its melted a bit of it away (although not completely thru). Regardless, should I replace the boot cover ASAP?

If your bike gets wet then yeah. Mine had a small melt hole and the first time I rode in the rain it filled with water when I took it off 3 days latter still had water in it. Luckily mine didn't drain into the primary but some peeps have...

I only use one bracket (lower one) because I had a hold shear off. So I used to zipties towards where the upper one mounts and haven't had any problems and it has kept it farther from the header

Browland, I used up my good karma--I've openly worried about parts availability/service for my bike. I complain and boom.--this happens. My bike is 3 months old. Do you suppose the boot should be replaced under warranty? I do... do I call the local HD Dealer for my fair share of abuse? I want a new boot cover. btw, thanks for your advice. Its been dry where I'm at, but I'll make sure to keep the bike inside when the forcast calls for rain.

Harley might replace it for you and see if they will double check the routing, or you might be able to ask if anyone has a spare one from an old clutch cable. I replaced mine with one that came of a broken clutch cable when I bought the bike.

oh, good idea. I don't have any lying around but I'll look for some. Find it at a hardware store?

Also, I must say--I don't want to create a stir about what HD Dealers are good and which suck but...Monterey HD has been totally helpful. I had a brake cable recall on my bike and they were helpful with that as well. They said they'd replace the entire clutch line w/boot under warranty. Just bring it down. Anybody in the Bay Area--they're a nice ride down Hwy 1 away. I strongly recommend them.

Prolly get it at a hardware store but I always pic it up at the autoparts stores like advance, o'rielys, or autozone

i'm imagining its like rubber cement or something. just seal off the hole burned into the rubber boot. Im gonna do it. Thanks

mine did the same and the dealer fixed it as a warranty issue. may check with them first before you come out of pocket.

My rubber boot has a crack. What is the part number of the rubber boot for 2009 Buell XB12Scg? Where can I buy it?

Will this silicone boot fit ?

In the photo it shows the adel clamp holding the clutch cable(its mounted to the "dog-bone" stabilizer arm). Is this the actual location from the factory? My Bolt had the clamp just hanging on the cable, not attached anywhere. In the photo it seems that this clamp is what is holding the cable so close to the exhaust. Never could figure out where my clamp was supposed to mount to. Without the clamp my clutch cable is no where near as close to the exhaust as the one in the photo. Comments?

^^^^ i believe that only the 2003 initial XB run had the adel clamp as you described. morphed into the coat-hanger curly-Q holder which then morphed into the voluntarily recall excellent bracket. all attach to front motor mount. at the price of a new clutch cable i recommend not dicking around with the aforementioned lousy clamps and go with the replacement cable bracket @ $12. part number N0012.1AAA still 2 in the H-D system as of early last week. i have them if you can't find one.
