I just got my 2008 Lightning back on the road this weekend after a full engine rebuild and it has a verry small leek on both cyl base gaskets. Ain't nobody got time fo dat!

After all the work I put into this ride there's no way I'm leaving it like this.

What kit should I use? The site only lists a kit for up to 2006 I believe. Will the kit work? I tried to contact Cometic but haven't heard back yet.

That's great! Just for future reference....what base gaskets did you us that wound up leaking?
You might help another member avoid the same issue.

I support the Cometic decision. I have a set on my race S1 and my 08 12R. I probable could have helped you with the numbers Dellinger but Cometic is faster than me. :D

Thanks 08herobolt,I got impatient and called. I don't know why I didn't try that first. Oh yeah, I'm use to crappy customer service and automated phone systems.

I used a HD hole engine kit. I'll replace everything including the trick blue valve stem seals I just replaced.

Just out of curiosity, what was the difference between the base gaskets in 04-06 and 07-10? I used the Cometic gaskets on my rebuild too, haven't had any problems. The OEM base gasket was a huge pain getting off.

Just had a small leak in the front Rocker Cover Gasket and replaced with OEM, but if I ever need to due the whole kit, I will look into these. Didn't see a kit for the 05 XB12, guess I need to call and make sure first.

Their site only shows 00-03 and 04-06 but they have a 07-10 if you call. They should update their site. To many people won't keep looking and they will loose the business .

Old post but this is what I was looking for. Mine is an 04 XB12S and the website only offers 07+. And the Genuine James gaskets website has similar issues. I tried calling but no response yet.

Can anybody steer me as to which Top End gasket kit I need? My base gaskets are leaking and I want to do this job one time only. I'm no Buell expert so I don't know the exact changes that apply over the years. If I need to buy the kit and expect to purchase a few additional gaskets that is fine, I just need to know which ones so I that have everything on hand.

Also which distributor do you all recommend?

Thanks, Buell guru's!

You can get HD Top End gasket kit at any HD in your area, or I am sure our Lunaticfringe has them in stock and can answer any and all your questions about any Buell better than any HD dealership .

Thanks for the leads! I'll contact your recommendation. The Amazon linked to an 04-06 XL... Does that sound right?
Part number 17049-04. Super affordable. The valve cover gaskets didn't look right but it's likely a stock photo.

Lunatic is probably your best bet. James, Cometic, both are great companies with better reputations than HD. Cometic has a great customer service department that will take care of you if you go that route. They will even put together a special kit of gaskets of your preferred thickness if your application requires.

I would start with Lunatic if it were me. He knows what works in these bikes better than any...

very kind words on your part and much appreciated. in all honesty when i find something that is top quality, consistent, and works wonderfully i stick with it. i know cometic and athena make both "top-end" and full gasket sets for sportster/buell applications but have only ever used james. i will occasionally cherry pick a few assorted gaskets from H-D but have always used james. cole (azmidget91) also frequently rips and tears on these motors so curious what his preference is. the JAMES numbers are:
JGI-17049-04-X complete gasket set.....fits all XB 2003-2006 inclusive
JGI-17049-07-X """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" 2007-2010 inclusive

PM'ed you Lunatic. I like to keep my $ within the family.
My Local HD dealers aren't bad, but parts guys have a bad attitude about Buells. And Ebay and Amazon don't need my $.
I was digging James gaskets, based on principal, so that's the route I will take!
Now to find a clutch basket bearing... yikes
