crackcase breather alternative?

Buellxb Forum

I don't think this would. Think it might not hav been designed to work the same on a motorcycle as it would a car.

Summit Racing has some great parts for Trucks and Automotive applications. The system wouldn't work properly one the Bike. Buells already have Positive Crankcase Venting through the Rocker Covers, one for each Head.
This is why the PCV-valves is designed per vechicle. The Buells extra re-invented Reroute is helpful depending on the area in which you reside. Some say it doesn't help and some swear by it. Did it to mine XB12R-08, and some of the 1st gear stumbling seemed to lessen when it's hot weather.
Try not to mix too much automotive on a BIKE due to the cylinders are more and the designs are for whichever model machine made. Have fun with your machine. Welcome to the Forum.*Jimi

that is a PCV valve in your link. the BUELL XB has a PCV valve on it.

many threads here on the buell pcv valves and breather mod and for the tuber Buells there a few thing you can do with them like install a newer Buell XB rocker box cover that has the hole for the pcv valve..

google search and search here on BUELLXB.com for more threads on this. here are just a few..

from the service manual:
Crankcase Breathing System ,see fig.3-114. Presure created in the flywheel area on the piston downstroke is released through the REED VALVE into the gear case. From there a mixtre of crankcase air and oil mist is vented up the push rod covers to the upper rocker box(top of head).
see fig.3-115. Air is allowed to escape the rocker boxes by exiting the postive crankcase vent(PCV) valves(4)
locatedon top of the rocker boxes (top of rocker cover/valve cover). From the PCV valves the air enters the crankcase breather hoses(2,& 3). The crankcase breather hoses route through the air cleaner base plate (1) to the air box where it isdirected inside the air filter element and back into the engine. the oil mist collects and eventually returns to the crankcase through oil passageways in the cylinder heads. that how it is originally designed to work. maybe that might help you understand it somewhat better. see figures below..

native is correct in that each rocker cover has PVC valve already installed from factory. it is the 90 degree angled piece. i did the reroute on both of my XB9's and also a Hayden vent valve inline with the plumbing. i never rode either of them prior to the reroute so don't know if it made any difference but can honestly say that both run wonderfully with no stumbling, popping, hesitation...nothing.

i am (now) aware that our bikes have a built in PCV valve, but this doesn't pull a huge vacuum. it just siphons the air coming out to neutralize crankcase pressure or have a <1 in/hg vacuum while burning the small amount of oil vapor and keeping the air filter, throttle body and intake valves cleaner. it might not be awesome performance improvement, if it does anything at all, but i know that N/A cars have seen improvements and boosted cars have seen better gains. its not that im trying to mix my bike into a car, its trying to look at proven technology and see the application cross platform

The PCV valve is a spring-loaded valve with a specific orifice size designed to restrict the amount of air that's siphoned from the crankcase into the intake manifold. This is necessary because air drawn through the valve from the crankcase has a leaning effect on the fuel mixture much the same as a vacuum leak. So air flow through the valve must be controlled within certain limits.
From an online article, but basically PCV valves are engine specific - I'd stick with the stock ones.

Just leave it alone...
It works fine from the factory...!

I've experimented on two XB12's. The factory system works just fine as is.

if you watch the videos in the threads i have links to . it shows how the PCV valves work it is basicly the same for cars and bikes like .

on the buell xb (from factory) from both pcv valves hoses runs into the airbox(intake) on the outside of the airfilter, this causes it to pull the crankcase vapors (gases) out to help relieve pressure and sucks them into the intake to get burned. Great method easy and cheap !!

now i used to reccomend the breather mod to everyone , but i have since, will only reccomend it if you are having problems with sttutering and such.

it may help but will not solve the problem (just like Mike has said before in another thread(i think said that or something along those lines, i think i have said that to)

anyways the buell pcv valve is an umbrella type so it doesnt take alot of pressure to open and close the pcv vavle to let vapors and gases out. if you put a pcv valve from a car it may be a spring type with a different pressure rating to open and close it which could cause it to build up to much pressure in the crankcase and then you would blow out a gasket and be leaking oil all over or maybe worse ...not good.

i highly suggest watch the videos and read the threads in links above lots of goood info in them,
and stick to the stock pcv valves .... because like steven says

basically PCV valves are engine specific - I'd stick with the stock ones!!!

i would just leave it stock.as far as positive crankcase ventilation on a buell there isnt its more like breather road draft system
