So my 05 xb12r and I took a little spill yesterday. Rain in my apt complex and a girl speeding through in the middle of the road caused me lay her down on my left side. The girl ran off and I was more concerned about my bike than chasing a car on foot. The damage seems to just be a busted turn signal and a shattered windshield. My hopes was $90 worth of damage and done. However after inspecting it further, I cannot shift out of 1st gear, and the shifter is slightly bent but that seems to be all the visible damage.

I have very little bike mechanics experience, but I have done almost everything under the sun with cars. My question is where to begin? Do I just have a bent shifter lever or is there more going into it? Also should I be worried about other problems since it seemed to be running fine(though it took a little bit to start back up after the fall) and the clutch is working properly.

Thanks, David

taking a bit to start is prolly from the fluids being sloshed around. Do you have a pic of the damage as long as the main shaft is fine you should be okay to replace the external parts of the shifter.

These engines are pretty darn tuff more than likely your shifter is just bent and nothing internal is messed up. Have you tried rocking the bike back and forth to get it to shift gears?

The other thing you can do is pop the Primary cover off and make sure the shif shaft isn't geeked

Not that I could see. Some places were damp, but I think thats from the residual rain. I rocked it and got it down to first, and it'll go to 2nd but neutrals being finicky now. I think the shaft is fine. I think I may have just cosmetic damage! But are there any other concerns I should look into?

Replace the shifter lever first. That might be your only issue. It's def bent, but nothing else does. Clean the area well, then check for leaks. Those primary covers are fragile and they can leak easily. Good thing you had the sliders.

Take the lever off and bend it back. I did it to an 09 XB12 and it is fine. Saves some bucks too. Do not attempt to heat to bend it back as it will not work AND it will melt the plastic spacer inside the lever. Put it in a heavy duty clamp and do it that way.
