DIY seat cowl

I like it. I like the way the top horizontal surface lines up with the same, on the tank; and the way the back extends out a little, at the top.
I'll bet you could sell the entire tail section as a kit.

Too much damn work any way... heheheh.

So I was trying to shape the bottom to match the seat so I could mock it up on the seat... snapped a chunk! More beer and hot glue in the morning.

Soo... got a little done over the weekend. After I prepped it for glass it looked a little bigger to me and I saw some flaws... (not perfectly symmetrical). Oh well... if it sucks it was practice yea?

Prepped

First few layers.. damn that resin sets up fast.

Few more layers, body filler, sand and paint and hope it fits!!

There are 4 notches cut out of the edge of the seat pan. Front two are for the strap and back two are for securing helmets. Figure I will glass in a couple L brackets to the inside and screw em under the seat at those notches. Probably clean up the edge with some door edge guard or split some vacuum tubing.

And thanks.. I will be the only kid on my block with one!!

Had to destroy the plug to remove it! Some more trimming and sanding left to make it fit properly but progress has been made!

That is AWESOME! Turned out great, it's proportionate and the lines look good. Can't wait to see it all finished up and painted. I bet it'll look like the bike came with it...

Thanks man... The forward edge is too far forward on the seat... I hope by sanding on the lower edges it will scoot back a bit. Kinda tricky to get it to fit perfect since I eyeballed the fit to the seat. Ill report back. Getting back to work on it.

I love this build. You are doing a great job. Thanks for posting so much detail. +Rep for you [up]

Damn Mike, thats turning out really good, but I cant wait for the other mod you were talking to me about... I will be patiently waiting.
Great job on the work.[up]

It's like that cowl is on Jenny Craig since the first time we saw it. Looking good[up]

Thanks guys! Pretty proud of myself so far. So after a few hours of sanding and shaping the edges... This is about as good as its gonna fit. After fitting it perfectly to the seat I realized the seat is not symetrical. Ugh... Now it doesnt line up perfectly on the bike. Mostlty just my ocd... I doubt any one will be eyeballing it like me... But still... Grumble... Grumble.

Next step: body filler, glazing putty and primer.

Looks great, can't wait to see it in paint. :)

(have you thought about a softer edge, where it contacts the seat? Maybe an upholstered edge, or just foam? It would solve the problem of the uneven interface, and reduce wear on the upholstery.)

Thanks.. yea.. I am going to use door edge guard on all edges.. especially where it contacts the seat.

Got it body worked and primed! Just need to sand and reprime a few more times. Lotsa pin holes!

Also made a temp timing cover until I finish an illuminated one I'm working on.

Removed the ugly belt guard tabs on my swing arm too!

Damn I ****** love your bike!! That tail frame that you mand looks soooo ****** saweeet and now the seat cowl..!! It just make me want one!! But then I have to try to talk you into making me that tail frame... :D

lookin good!

Personally I'd rethink the door edge guard stuff, I don't think it'll look good. Are the edges not real good? They look good in the pics.
