Sittin' in my shop, drinkin a cold one, just digging on my 09 Bolt. I know chin fairings are designed to direct cooling air up into the engine(especially air cooled mills). If this is truly correct then why is there a large hole on the front of the left side of the fairing. Does it have a purpose or is it just cosmetic? Oh by the way, MERRY Christmas to all Buellers and there loved ones! PS. To all up north it was 85 yesterday on Planet Florida and my ride was great! Please don't hate me!

I thought it was there to hide the front of that nasty looking stock muffler... No seriously, it deflects road debris from the front of the motor and under. And I think its looks better on than off.

Not sure about the protection/hiding idea. Most all bikes made(since forever) don't have chin fairings. Plus if it was just for protection it would bend towards the rear for style. No they are for scooping cooling air towards the hot area. Look at water cooled sport bikes. the air is scooped up to enter the radiators. Plus there are bikes with oil filters that are way more exposed than our XB's. I just can't wrap my brain around this hole.

I prefer the chin fairing on, it was engineered to be on there for a reason just like the belt guards. A good size rock hitting the oil filter at freeway speeds without the fairing would do a good bit of damage and could compromise the integrity of the filter.
