Dude your fan is fine! You worry to much.
If you need/ any of the engine parts I have left, lemmie know I will hook ya up

the ring is the metal seal made into the gasket to seal the cylinder into the head. The molten metal look of the head gasket seems to be from reaching to high of a temperature from running lean. Did it damage the piston? The picture doesn't show the piston very well. Might want to check the top ring also. Sorry about the luck bro, been kinda having one of those years myself.:(

it was the gasket, I'm just gonna say this now, the oem hd gaskets in our bikes are pathetic

when I pulled the cylinders off it was as if they never existed

right now I'm looking at a piston upgrade and replacing the rear cylinder
I found a great deal on an 09 rear cylinder so I'm going with that one since it's black

I'm also going to need a fan

Yea, i know thats a gasket, it looks like there is a broken ring siting on the gasket if you look close. Never mind.

I also took pictures as I tore the engine down if anyone is interested I'll post them

and I put the 9 motor in and got it running, I went down the street to test it out my cel came on and on my way back to the house it got jammed in 1st, yea.. I know.., I hooked it up to my computer and the front cylinder wasn't getting spark.

I'm uploading some more photos right now

that ring looking piece is just a piece of the gasket

and here are the pistons

not really, most of my riding is straight down the interstate between 4 and 4.5k rpm

I'm assuming it was just natural wear since my bike has over 30k on it, but the further I tore it apart the less pleased I was with the stock gaskets. I have a great appreciation for how much better the gasket set I ordered is made. I'm really kicking myself for not changing out all of the gaskets over the summer though.

Hey wolfo68,

Bad luck indeed man, sorry to hear about that. You'd probably want to change the cylider anyway, the hot gases exiting at high speed through the broken gasket probably eroded the mating face of the cylinder wit the head. You probably want to check your head as well since the gasket surface may have been damaged and the head may have warped slightly.

If I had the coin I would definitely take the opportunity to replace the rear cylinder, head, piston and rings. As a matter of fact I'd do the front as well or at least freshen the hone & change the rings. While I was at it I'd do the valves - why not, you've got the heads off anyway.

Check out http://www.nrhsperformance.com/ekitbuellxb12r.shtml the price is really good and it is a straight bolt on job! All you'd need is to freshen your valves, maybe put a multi-angle seat on them (& check your rear head isn't warped of course) and you'd be back on the road with more power :)

Just looked at the pics of your pistons, the front one looks OK, but the back one is cooked, I wouldn't re-use it but at the very least I'd change the rings, wrist pin and retainers/clips

yea, I've got a new cylinder coming. checking on new pistons. and it's supposed to snow tomorrow so my season is over anyway.

the rear head was fine, the front I snapped off a header stud so I have to work that one out lol

Yeah, we are going to get snow any day now as well, but I am hoping to get a few more days in before then :) Header studs are always a PIA, I've rarely managed to mess with them on any vehicle without at least one a nuissance of itself :)

She's coming along. I've got the engine back together and the wiring harness on, just need to put oil lines on, front end and mount all the grounds and battery, and fill her with fluids.
