The fan on my 2008 XB12 never runs when the engine is on. Even after riding hard in the twisties up a 4000ft mountain in 70 degree weather (California) and then sitting at an idle for a few minutes. Never heard it run in 90 degree weather either. As soon as I shut the engine off the fan always comes on and runs for awhile.

I have a right-side scoop but so does my '05 XB12 and the fan on that bike will go on with the engine running. These bikes have different ECM's so maybe this is normal for the '08's??

lowrev: i say normal. i'm on my 8th XB right now and all have had RS scoop, stock mapping, and ridden pretty gently because i'm a pussy....but in some very hot weather. during no time have i ever experienced an "on-fan" while moving. i've had 3 of the 08-09 models now and fan on them operates exactly as you've described. i think you're fine.

Lowrev.. does the 08 have a race map or ebr mapping or any custom tune mapped. If so I may not get hot enough due to the map having a ritcher fuel curve that will help cool the engine.. expecially the rear cylinder... also if it is a custom tune the fan "on" temperature set point could have raised too high..

Doesn't sound normal to me, my fan turns on while riding "well I can only hear it at lights" in the summer temps.

I ride her pretty hard though but the OP sounds like he's riding his like it should be as well? anyhow if it were my bike I'd have it looked at.

FYI, my bike had a really lean map, would get hot during rides, and the fan would run while I was riding . I added the RSS, and updated the map for one that is richer. My fan does not come on now while riding, only after shutdown, which I prefer. I'd rather my machine run cooler than hotter for longevity.

My fan has only come on 3 times in 2500 Houston Texas miles (commuted daily through summer).
All due to HEAVY traffic. Only once while i was stopped at a light, other times immediately after shutting it off.

Mine is stock ecm, 2009 xb12scg, right side scoop.
Take it for what it's worth... but I'm inclined to think you're alright.

The bike had the race ECM and a Drummer when I got it. It ran great at the high end but really crappy on the low end. The fan was going on and off all the time with that set up. I went back to the stock ECM and a lightly moded stock pipe and haven't heard the fan come on while riding since.

It must be that the race ECM has the temp for the fan set lower than the stock ECM and maybe the stock '05 is set lower than the '08.

Haven't heard the fan in months.... It hasn't been above 40 degrees when I've ridden in the last few months either!

'08 xb12scg here. My fan usually only turns on when I am stuck in traffic in 85+ degree weather for a long time. Any airflow usually keeps it plenty cool without the fan. I have a right side scoop, Hawk exhaust, and a stock ECM with lightly tuned fuel maps.
