Hey guys I have been haveing promblems with slow starts and couple clicks before it would start. So I ordered a battery. New battery load tested fine.
I put new battery in and went to turn over it clicked about 4 times. Smoke started comeing pouring out from were my fuel pump connects. I disconnected battery.
I pulled all the grounds cleaned them I also ran a 6 gauge wire from ground under airbox to battery. Im trying to repair fuel pump harness. Melted it pretty bad. i only found the ground strap under the seat and one behind the headlights. Where are the rest of them

hold on son. your bike was fine other than indications of a battery on the way to the graveyard...correct? and now after replacing battery your fuel pump wiring harness smoked and melted? clearly something went awry during the replacement as one has nothing to do with the other.

That's a new one. A fuse should have blown before this was possible.
Why did you make a new ground under the airbox?

There is a ground on the front of the frame, it's not the easiest to get to.

What is this harness and how are you repairing it? Pictures please.

It sounds like a fuse blew and someone put in another rated way too high, which enabled this to happen.

All of my fuses are right. None of them higher then what the fuse box cover says.

Yes there were signs of the battery going out (slow cranking, clicking before starting, load test failed)

I read on another post. Somebody else had the same promblem on the post somebody informed him to run a ground from under airbox to battery.
I got the pump all wired back up and the bike turns over and runs fine.

Havent rode it. Still kinda baffled on how this happend lol
Sorry about speeling guys. Trying use my phone thats cracked up pretty bad

Never seen that one before, good information to have. [up]

Now I'm curious as to which wire is shorting out and letting the two circuits connect.

I rode a little bit today (bundled up). Rode fine no problems. But I'm hearing some whining on decel(mostly in 1st and 2nd) Doesn't change when I squeeze clutch. I just installed new belt. I also had front and rear wheel off. Any idea what it could be?

I would like to say I unplugged the new ground from battery and turned it over and there's a huge difference. Turning over is slower there's a pause when I hit starter.

I plug it back up and there's no pause . Bike barly has time to crank before it starts. Huge difference in starting and I'm seeing 14v charging now when I wasent before. I turn bike on and hook a volt meter up to battery and unplug the new ground. It's drops about .20 - .30 volt. Plugs it back up and it goes back up

OK. Sounds like you are narrowing it down. So if you jumper the bike frame to the battery it's good? Without the jumper it's not so good?

Your battery's negative cable it bolted right to your seat subframe right? Your subframe is bolted to your frame right? So that jumper eliminates those contact points. I think you have a poor connection between your subframe and your frame.

Try this. Remove one of the bolts from your seat subframe. Wrap your jumper wire around it and screw it back in. Then remove your air box cover and connect the other end of your jumper wire to the rear air box cover screw. That would bypass the subframe connection and rule that out.

There are several things it could be but try that first.

Actually I was looking as your pictures a little better. I was wondering how the bad ground and wire harness burn up could be related. You don't have the diode in your fuse box. The diode is important and is part of the rectifier circuit converting AC from your generator to DC to power the bike. Look at your fuse box cover to identify its location.

Do that first:)

Compare my pic to your fuse box pic.

My box dosent say anything about diode.
I have two spots for spare fuse and rest are as shown.

Good idea ill run a jumper from the big ground to the subframe mounting point then from there to battery.

Yes when I have jumper hooked up it cranks perfect. I unhook jumper not so perfect cranking no more.
