Well, I was out riding yesterday and I ran out of gas. Didn't think it was the fuel because the light never came on. But sure enough it was. Now the sound of the fuel pump purging is not happening. It just sounds like its straining to pump. It cranked and ran fine on the way home. But I'm not sure about the pump. Anybody come across this problem. Is it the fuel pump or something else.

see if your fuelpump is getting power...if so, and it's not building up pressure, it's a goner! [smirk]

would check the warnlight too, so you don't get the same problem again ;)

ecmspy has diagnostics. try the fuel pump test. check the relays. my bike gets funny every now and again with the fuel pump. i just smack the lower portion of the tank and it goes on again. im milking that pump for everything before change it out. not too happy with the amount of bs to get the pump out.

I dont think it was the pump. After i put a gallon of gas in it last night, it started fine. I'm just questioning the purging sound when you turn the switch on. Not sure if it will mess something else up.

where at in nc i have two cables for spy, on a car running out of gas once does not generally hurt a pump but the constant running of a fuel pump with a little gas is bad ( as in dollaring it at the pump in stead of a fill up) would imagine bike same way best to keep full, btw i would test fuel pressure maybe some one can give you the spec think they also have an in tank strainer which could be clogged

As far as the running it out of gas not hurting a fuel pump I'd definitely have to disagree. Fuel pumps of pretty much any type, or size, use the liquid they are pumping as a coolant/lubricant. No lube = bad day...

Running the pump on low gas? The fuel pump can't tell how much gas you have in your tank until you are out of it...having a 1/4" over the top of the pump or 8 feet doesn't matter, as long as it has the fuel to pump, it will.

I'd simply do the regular diagnostics check: pressure, voltage, etc.. and then go from there...

Hope this helps...

have dissagree severely when the gas is low the pump is not covered by gas which cools it as we both agree so running low of gas is bad for a pump it has more to do with cooling than lube a pump that runs in gas will pump straight water for many hours usually not really any lube there but is being cooled by water if it was a diesel pump i would say you were correct because many oem diesel pumps wont even pump gas for very long cause not enough lube have been working on fuel inj cars for about twelve years and bikes for three

I think we are saying the same thing...running "low" on gas is functionally starving the pump for coolant, or running it dry...

I guess what I was saying was I think running a fuel pump dry is always a bad idea...but I think we all get the picture...I just needed to be more specific.

As for the original intent of this thread:

Do your diagnostics!!!! If the pump isn't putting out adequate pressure, you're gonna need a new one. If it is, then maybe it sounded funny cause it had to prime itself or had some residual air in the pump or...who knows. If it doesn't meet spec for pressure I'd probably just get another one.

Hope this helps!

Sorry for jacking the thread!

Jon
