The aftermarket gear indicators I'm familiar with tap into the electronic feeds to the speedo & tach, then calculate & display the gear based on the combination of both inputs.

These devices can be useful on close-ratio 6-speeds, but I'd question the need for one on our XBs. It's pretty easy to sense what gear you're in...

I was always looking at the gear indicator on my gsxr, with the buell I find I don't need it.

Haha don't ask your self on what gear you are .... You are already in fifth gear, don't look for the sixth .....

Certain bikes it might be a little more needed but I've never had a problem knowing what gear I'm in on my 12s

If you're good with electronics or know someone that is, you can build one. This guy has a pretty good write up on one he made. http://www.electronics-lab.com/projects/autom ...
Wow, I admire that guy's inventiveness, but man, all the time it must've taken him to fabricate that gadget and get all the bugs worked out? The result being that he's got a gauge to tell him what he could have developed a sense to detect anyway? I'd personally rather spend all that time riding instead. :D

I've got a gear indicator on mine. Can't say I'll actually use it, but it's there.

wolfo68......did u install it urself and if so, how? or does anyone know, how and to which wires to connect it to? the reason I'm asking, not cuz i need it to determine my gear, but I'm working on a custom dash and want to include it, among a few other things. so any help is appreciate it. :D

The ebay ads say it should be pretty simple to connect, as long as u have an electronic speedo and tacho and I'm referring to the ones without the magnetic sensors.

I'll give you a write up when I get home yodazzz.
None of this stuff is really hard if you're paying attention and have the wiring schematics.

yes, i did see the sure shift, but the sureshift is about $160 and shipping is not even included from germany. Its more than what im willing to spend right now on that feature. Btw, the M-Lock looks pretty sweet from those guys too and I think someone in this forum had it installed. That might be my next investment.....

wolfo...looking forward to hearing from u.:D

A good write up on a DIY project unit that is specific to our XB's and costs pennies on the dollar compared to a purchased unit would be GREAT.

Okay so basically it's like this

You splice into the wires that run to your gauge cluster.

Black to black, they are both ground #13
Red to orange/White, Wire the hot wire (red) into the ignition wire for the gauges
Yellow to Pink, Tach pulse (pink) goes to it's own wire in this case it was yellow so it can read the tach input
Green to White, Speedometer also has it's own wire, it is green, to be able to read the speedo input and calculate gears
Brown to tan/yellow, The neutral light is wired into so that the unit can tell when it should not be calculating during it's learning mode.

Then there is a white wire that you touch to a ground in order to put it into learning mode and cycle through the gears to set it up.

Yes it was an ebay unit I used here, and they should come with an install paper that tells you if the wires are different.

Save your money and learn to read your tach and speedo to know what gear your in.

On my 2009 XB12Scg, the following is what I go by:

25MPH - 2500RPM = 2nd gear
35MPH - 3500RPM = 3rd gear

And so on...of course it's not SPOT on speed/RPM wise, but very closely matching needles on the gauges.

So, by going by that and having increased speed and RPMs, after a while you will learn what gear you are in just by looking at the two.

Where's the fun in that?
S'pose it deppends on your definition of fun...If it's figuring out a redundant solution to a non-problem, then making a gear indicator for an XB sounds like all kinds of fun! If just riding is how you define 'fun', then maybe not so much... :D

wolfo u r the man and great write up!! much appreciated. Im gonna be gone on vaca for 2 weeks, before i can start this project. I will keep u guys posted! thanks again to all of u.

Btw, how do u like the M-Lock?

It was as cheap as buying a new ignition ans I don't have to worry about leaving my keys in the bike. Love it.
