I logged on to the Erik Buell Racing website and got excited over race spec motors being made available. If you haven't seen them yet the line up reads like a good, better and best strategy. Starting with a 1125R 135RWHP, 1125RR 175RWHP and finally the beast: 1190RR 185RWHP! I had to write Erik, so I did and it turned out great because he wrote back a couple days later. In short I congratulated him on his new racing venture and spoke of my background with mainly Ducatis and the fact my new 1125CR is a fantastic motorcycle, especially after I dialed in the suspension. I also told him I'm in the process of researching numerous upgrades for the bike mainly because not many are available. His response was: "if you really want to build a really bad a** one to carry the stuff (upgrades), try one of our 1190 motors". After reading that I said to myself,"I wonder how much that puppy cost?".

His response was both informative and interesting, another point he made was, "the bike was held back from real credibility with HD motors". I think we all kind of knew that, mixing HD with a sport bike is like trying to mix oil and water. Erik Buell sounds like a really gracious person, if I could describe him by just reading the email. I wonder if I can get a waiver to the rule that only licensed race teams can buy the spec motors? Afterall, the 1125CR build I'm planning will be a model of sorts for a parts and accessory company. However, I'm sure those motors will be a chunk of change. He went on to say the 1125RR was a 1125R with some hot rod parts like titanium valves, high comp pistons and cams. Another interesting tidbit is the fact he was approached by several top name racers after the NJ event and was told with a more powerful motor the 1125RR would be untouchable. Since NJ his race team has gotten another 25HP out of the 1190, so it looks like the technology is moving ahead quickly. His racing goal is AMA in 2010 and WSBK in 2011. All he needs now as I alluded to in my email was a great golden investor. I think he meant to get the assembly line working again. In the meantime he will develop the bike via the racing circuit.

Johnny, That is REALLY Awesome... it's good to hear that Erik is looking through a long dark tunnel and seeing a light at the end of it... did you ask him (or did he mention) anything about plans on converting everything over to metric? My theory is that if he's going to make a go of breaking out away from Harley and once again some day selling bikes for street use, he's going to have to get a better dealer network that'll be interested in selling his bikes instead of relegating them to the back of the showroom like Harley dealers have.. the problem is that the dealers that sell the Japanese and European bikes, will only consider selling the next generation of Buell's if they can service them.. and that means they have to be Metric.

He said that his goal is WSBK in 2011? While I find that admirable, how and where the f**k is he going to produce a homologation bike? No way WSBK is going to give him the kind of breaks DMG did. WSBK bikes have to be IN production, and street legal.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a fan of the guy, but he's delusional if he thinks he's going to get any special treatment on those rules.

maybe he knows something that you don't :D

Hopefully, he was eluding to the goal/dream of having a production bike, once again, available to the public by 2011.

Baal, daveXB12r and Stevenc150: All of you have super valid points. I didn't even think of homologation until you brought it up Baal, otherwise I would have shot an email back to him. Maybe I still should, might have been a Freudian slip on Erik's part? lol. Or maybe it was like Steven said, a goal/dream. The plot thickens.

A new production bike would give me a case of the sweats, especially if it looked like the yellow one in the "spy" photo. Now, just ask him to direct the exhaust away from the rear brake.
