I have seen a couple posts related to Engine code 21 - Interactive muffler control inoperative. From everything I have read it's either the servo or the valve is sticking. The check engine light goes on and off at random times while riding. I took the servo off today and everything seemed to be in order.

What is the best way to tell if the servo is working and/or it's the valve sticking?

Would really like to avoid getting ecmspy and the cable at this point.

ECMspy - free. Cable - around $30 bucks or make your own for even cheaper. It's worth it even if all you plan to do is use it for TPS resets.

Do you even really want to keep the exhaust valve operational? First thing I did when I got mine was pull the cable and tack the valve open. Sounds way better and the amount of HP/torque lost at low RPMs is entirely negligible.

If you go this route though - make sure you leave the cable plugged in up top or you'll always have the code. ASB, i know, and possibly BuellParts too, sell a cheap little device to trick you ECM into thinking the cable is still hooked up.

I like your idea of keeping the valve open. I just realized that I might not have a valve anymore due to the previous owner replacing stock exhaust with a d&d aftermarket exhaust (just got the bike a week ago). Also realized that there wasn't a cable attached to the servo when I looked at it (rookie mistake). So its not connected if at all there...

Ah ha. Yes, the D&D uses no valve nor cable. Do you know if your ECM has the stock fuel mappings? That would be something to look into.

You have quite an education ahead of you, my friend! But I really applaud your choice in brand. What other bikes have you owned? Ive had my 07 12R for 4 years and have loved every minute of it. There is a wealth of static info on this site that has benefitted me immensely and plenty of helpful guys will lend advice. Use the search engine of your choice to look up anything and spend time browsing the threads

Welcome aboard. Any pics of the new scoot?
