I'm hittin' the road, but here's one to tickle your brain. Don't let the frustration get to you :)

No, but that's a very good guess. I imagine most have not seen this thing from this angle - from the outside looking in :)

Good thread! I'm a lurker on photography-on-the.net (a Canon forum. A LOT of talent on that site.) and they have a thread like this. They post all different kinds of stuff though, not just motorcycle stuff. I like the Buell specific idea tho! [up] I'm an extremely amateur photographer and photography enthusiast, if you will. I own a Canon SX220HS that I shoot with. I've only owned point and shoot cameras, but I really want to get a DSLR and try to get into it a lot more.

Is this thread for anyone to post a macro shot in or are we just guessing your shots?

I don't have any clue what the last picture posted might be...

I just wanted to do something different picture-wise and thought it might be fun. Sometimes personal tensions get a little high on forums, so hopefully this is a nice distraction.

Oil filter?
Yep! I assume the clue helped? I was about to do another oil changed, so I grabbed the camera. This is a look inside. I never really noticed the teeth before.

Due to the extremely limited focus depth of field with macro shots (less than a mm), I couldn't really get the whole filter, inside and out, in focus without using a technique called focus stacking. But that takes a lot of time and, well, this is just for fun.

This is a fun game.
It would be interesting if you could tell us how you do some of these shots; eg. lens, lighting, etc., that might be useful to us amateurs.

Yeah, just a wild guess, then I went out and looked at some various filters I had in the cabinet (Buell and Fram) and none of them looked like that.

williegoat, thanks for asking!

The mystery macro shot was actually from my new Buell oil filter! Maybe this series of shots will help illustrate:

The first two were taken by my point-and-shoot Canon PowerShot S95. The last two by my one of my Canon digital SLR macro setups: EOS-5D Mark II camera, MP-E 65mm 1-5X macro lens, and MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite:

For product macro shots, a Shadow Box is very helpful. Lighting really is everything. But since I'm shooting a lot of pics of stuff already on the Buell, in addition to the flash from my Twin Lite, I often use supplemental lighting like this Energizer Carabiner LED light:

Macro photography can be very challenging. It takes a lot of patience because the depth of field (the amount that is in focus) is extremely narrow. The slightest hand movement throws your subject out of fucus. A side-affect of this is that you must use a narrow lens aperture to increase the depth of field, which reduces the amount of available light; everything you look at appears dark. Lighting becomes extremely important. Then imagine trying to balance all that while shooting a moving insect! Extremely challenging!
