I thought that the rifles under stood for gunnery

No, the rifles are earned at E-3 and go through E-8. Three chevrons up and two rockers down is Gunny/E-7. Understandable though, I think we're the only branch that has Gunny.

Stationed in New London, CT & Holy Loch Scotland and NSB Bangor, WA. 12 years, two days of service. Two sea tours (FBM) and one shore duty (instructor) @ TTF.
