HD Why

^^^This is probably the route of this picture. Could also be development test units in which case the liability that would be carried in re-using those parts is too great. While this pic makes us want to cry, this is probably not all that uncommon. I have personally worked in new product development and have seen similar sights (but with other products in my case).

Dro and Fatty are 100% correct! I happens everyday at HD and all manufactures. That dumpster pic was taken in like 06 or 07. Those were test mules and QC rejects like said above. Although lots of good parts on those bikes it's too much of a risk to put any of those parts out on the road. Lawyers would eat it up and spit Buell out. But with that said we all actually paid for those units as those are just figured into the cost of production and passed on to the customer.

I have a insider as well, what made me sick is when just here recently in their production facility in Brazil they had over 100 complete VINs come across his desk that were to be set up for destruction. That was just a couple months ago. [mad]

the dumpster pic and what the op is talking about are two different things though.

Correct! Sorry it got off subject towards the end. They were probably loose parts and what not. So they would have to be sorted and then send to a packager, then redistributed which would not be cost effective. It would be easier to destroy and write it off. Sad for us owners but makes since as a manufacture.

Its only sad because of the final outcome of Buell. If the brand had continued not a single thought would be given towards scrapped parts. And its not like parts arent available. There are a few great sources for new parts, as well as dealerships out there, special order, big whoop most motorcycle dealers special order parts regardless of brand its rare they keep much in stock.

Don't know about XBs but the local HD here chucked some their Blasts away just like in the picture above within the last year or two......nothing related to R&D or promotional bikes.

Wish I knew what landfill those Ulysses went to...I see some blinkers I need and they look just fine. Wish H-D believed in recycling

I know buisness is buisness, but its like sending racing horse of to slaughter. I hate that BUELL is not around for the sake of its parent company (HD) to make a buck on ugly freaking clothing and merchandise. Makes me mad that an American company did this.:([mad]

Talked to a guy involved in the Buell liquidation. He said that HD destroyed 25 truck loads of spare parts for Buells. People were offering them money and they refused. They wanted to be the sole distributor of any remaining parts. Twenty five full truck loads is a lot of parts.

That doesnt make sense. There would be no reason to destroy the parts if they wanted to be the sole supplier, and that sounds like millions of dollars worth of invested money, no smart company would throw away money especially in those quantities. I think the story you were fed is a little bogus. Buell was lost due to cut backs, last thing they would do in a time where money was short, is destroy product.

We're talking about a company that turned down multiple offers from BRP; the first of which was an offer to buy the 1125 platform, the second offer being for the entire line.....instead, they spend money to shut down (during a time of financial disarray).

Thats not a smart company.
