Just got a call back from a dealer near me, and was quoted at $520 for a clutch + install! $330 for the clutch alone... is there anywhere cheaper to get these parts?

Is that all I would need? I haven't picked up the bike yet, and haven't driven it yet because of the clutch...

I was told the clutch was slipping badly, they had it adjusted by a dealer, and two miles later it started slipping again, would that be the plates?

I'm not sure. I've only replaced plates on 125s. Surely someone with more info will weigh-in.

BuellPartsGuy can give you some numbers, but if you have work done at a dealer expect to pay more.

I would ask them what all they think you need and why. Then after you get all the information tell them you can't afford to pay that much and order the stuff from ASB and do it yourself for a 1/3 the price.

But if you have any doubts in your abilities pay the extra cash to make sure it is done right.

I paid that insane amount........suck it up and realize that all Buell service done by Harley will cost an insane amount and take forever to get it back.

I feel your pain..........:(

you received the price for the complete clutch?
bearings, springs, plates, pressure plate, etc?

ask bpg in his forum...

Well I found the two parts on American Sport Bike for a combined total of $320, just what I was quoted at. I have an uncle that can do the clutch work with me, he's used to working on his Harley sportster.

How do you determine if it's the clutch itself or the plates, are there any tell-tale signs it's one or the other?

Ok coming from a ton of years on a japanese bike maybe I'm wrong...but a clutch is a clutch right? Fibre and steel plates ? Take it apart, replace with new, adjust accordingly and away go. If I'm wrong please feel free to correct. Wayne

No doubt a clutch is a clutch, but do I have to replace both components? Or could I save myself $170 by just fixing what needs fixing?

I cannnot see your clutch basket from here but I have never replaced one because of wear, damage, whatever. Had over 100,000 km on my 84GPz 750 and did 2 or 3 clutches. I am betting all you need is the fibers and maybe the steel plates if they are burnt or warped. Also, seems simple but lubing the clutch cable works wonders. Good luck, Wayne.

Ryan,

Enrgy One on ebay, the whole kit for around 150.00 includes the spring plate, steel and friction plates, and they also offer the tool you need to do the swap. I did mine in an afternoon and the new clucth is awesome.

Also, be sure you just replace both steel and friction plates, you will know if they are bad because the steel plates will be a blueish color from heat. sometimes in a pinch you can get by with replacing the friction only and "scuffing the steels, but I seriously advise against it.

Thanks stopie, but it no longer looks like I'm bringing the XB9R home [sad]
having problems with the title that could take a month, I can't wait that long for and "OK" deal. I'll probably pick up an Xb12r within a week...

Hey Ryan, are you from the Twin Cities area??? I saw the thread you started with that Craigslist link. The bike was listed in the Minneapolis section. If so, I know a guy in the northwest burbs that does insanely good work and his prices are great. He's legit and warranties his work. If the bike is still an option maybe you'd want this?? Let me know and I'll shoot you his info... if you are in the Twin cities!

Morehpforme:
I'm in Wisconsin, about 30 minutes south of Green Bay... I'd be interested in getting his info, if not for this bike, the next :D

So if I read this right, Ryan posted this, wasted our time, lost interest and moved on? Seems kinda shitty. Again, if I'm wrong, let me know.

or was seeing what he was getting himself into as far as clutch replacement. He stated above that he was having problems with the title transfer as well. I dont see that as wasting anyones time, i think he was just trying to learn some things.

Sorry for "wasting your time" racepro, not sure why you took it that way, but I'm not sending my money to someone that can't produce a title in their name. I'm now looking for a bike that has no strings attached, a Buell to be specific. I'm trying to learn what I'm getting myself into along the way.
