I have been lurking around the Buell forums since I started riding after high school, and I am finally seriously looking at a couple XB9Rs!

One question that I can't seem to find a clear cut answer on is how many miles is too many? I have found a couple beautiful firebolts for sale around me, and the one I am leaning towards has 31k miles. It is immaculate and has been taken care of and has service records to back it up.

So my question, should I be hesitant because of the high mileage?

no.
a well-maintained and cherished XB @31K miles is a much finer machine than an abused, wheelied, burn-out king @ 3100 miles.

31K is nothing for these bikes. Buy it and ride the heck out of it.

Re-sale drops off around 20K+ because there are so many low mileage ones left, not because they are bad. Since you are past that already, it should be cheap to buy fun to ride and you won't even lose to much on your re-sale (if ever! haha).

absolutely. A properly maintained motorcycle engine will run for the same amount of miles as a properly maintained automobile engine.

High mileage motorcycle is motorcycle with 150 000 miles, 7000 miles is not high mileage. Too high mileage is 500 000 miles.

I don't care how many miles it has as long as it has maitanance records and an owner YOU KNOW loved it. That's the whole reason I rebuilt mine when the crank went out. None of the bikes I was looking into had maintanamce history. 90% of the owners had no clue their bikes required valve adjustments or suspension rebuilds at specific mileage. Some couldn't even tell me the last time the oil was changed!

Shoot my GMC envoy has 250k on it. I can tell you every bit of maintainamce that's been done on it and show you receipts!
Buell has 41k and I can do the same with it.
