Can someone tell me how to test the fan to see if its broken or not? I just bought this bike a few weeks ago and it has not come on yet. It has a right side scoop so I know that would keep the rear cylinder cooler but im still worried that their is something wrong with the fan.

Does it come on when you shut it off after a ride? mine hardly ever comes on while riding.

krause: both my xb9 and xb12 have right side scoops. the 9 fan almost never comes on even on shut-down, the 12 almost always comes on only at shut down when air temp above 70. make sure your temp switch wire is plugged into the sensor which is on top of rear rocker cover. the fan is hot all the time, the ecm grounds the circuit according to demand which activates the fan. both mine are 2007's if that helps.

could you send me a pic of the where the temp switch sensor should be plugged in. mine doesn't even turn on after I shut it down. I rode hard for like 45 min the other day in 70+ temp and nothing. I checked the fuses and they all looked fine but thats all I thought to check.

FYI, mine threw a check engine code when my fan went bad (my fault--poor mounting of an aftermarket shock killed it... ). When I checked my codes by jumping the pins, the code it threw was the "fan voltage" message--so I'm pretty sure the OBD checks for fan healthiness--at least on the '09...

If it's a 09 it should on only run during riding should'nt it ?? Before 09 it was programmed to run when the engine was shut off but from 09 it came on during riding and not when the engine was turned off. Correct me if i'm wrong.

fan plug is on the left side(shift side), unplug it and check for voltage. Fan always has 12 volts to it, key on, run, and is switched through the computer for on/off, high/low speed. Then jump wires strait from the battery to the fan, it should come on and run on high.

It finally came on... Took a hard ride and heavy traffic jam in 85 degree weather the bike was cray hot... Is there any way to get it to turn on at a lower temp?

Yeah do a swithch mod so you can turn on when ever you like. I know lot of folks do this on DRZ400's just to help cool. Pretty simple thing.

Seems to me it only comes on when it calls for it. Why turn it on when it isnt needed? I think if it doesnt come on alot its a reflection that the bike is tuned very well. But im pretty new, I just read alot of posts and this is something I have read.

Krause,Welcome to the Forum Figured if you rode it for a bit it would eventually come on. There is a Ulysses Comfort Kit for the heat for your right leg(shield) and Right Side Scoop.DO NOT put the Rear Fan Shrould from the Ulysses Comfort Kit on the Bike you have.Should you decide to go that route.
Dealer Item! There is American Sport Bike.com also for parts. Check out the Mods Section of the Forum. On 2008 Through the 2010 Bikes the Stock Fan Program works by Speed and By Temperature.
The fan will come on above 12/15miles per hour and run on low speed while riding.IT will shut off when you come to a Stop. UNLESS you sit for a while Idling.
Now you may not hear it unless it kicks on to high speed when it is needed. The Low Speed is Very Quite at times Till you get used to the Bike! Check to see if you can spin the fan blade, just to be sure it is free of a wiring or something etc.. KEY Off. Even if the Erik Buell ECM is on the bike the Fan run program works the same.
That also depends on if you have explained to EBR that you want the [Temperature only] fan run program.Look at the rear of your Engine AT the TOP of it and you will see the wire that plugs in at the top of the Rear Heads Rocker cover(hollow area )at the top of the rear.Make sure and trace the wire to the fan and see if it has come unplugged.Never know what you will find when you first by a NEW to You Machine.
Read UP on your new Machine and Do the Fluids when the mileage is Ready. It is an Aircooled Engine so Fluids are everything to the Buells. BE Gentle on tightening the Drain Plugs. Just Snug with a new O'ring does the trick!AmsOil 20/50 around 2'500 to no more than 3'100/miles on changes in both areas of the Buell works well! There are Manuals here on the Forum to Check on OR Download if needed. Some areas of the Buells have changed a LOT and Some areas are simular NO matter what years.
Your 2009 Bike-is different than the older models of Buells. The Electronics(ECM) areas especially. NEVER HOOK up the Older Version of ECM SPY to a new(2008 thru.,2010)Buell there is a Newer Better Version for that.Well this will get you started in the Right Direction.READ UP! Post up when you can.Good Luck! Ride Safe.*Jimi[up]

The fan on my stock ecu for my 08 only comes on after shut down and only in extreme over heating did it once come on while running.Thats what it was meant to do according to buell.I asked.Dont know if 09s do the same but you can always ask a HD dealer that sells or sold buells.

Yes some that have bought the 2008 through the 2010 buells may not have been back to the dealer. Some 2010 Buells slipped through with the older Fan Run Program.
There was a free upgrade ReFlashing (from 2008/2010)from the Dealers AND the ones that were still being sold were NOT allowed to be Sold without the Reflashing of the ECM with the newer fan Run Program. Buell Bikes Engines were Overheating badly & coughing also coming off the dead stop of Idling so Harleys Research along with the Warranty Dept., came up with using a Reflasing of Ecms & the NOW called 2010 Buell Fan Run Program. YES I agree that is a Cheap fix for the 2008 and 2009 Bike Engines but it does work!
It was already working well for the 2010/Buells that were reflashed before being sold or Left the Buell Manufacturing plant so there you go!
I'm sure some Bikes Engines may Not Have recieved the Upgrade depending on the Owner or Previous Owner not possibly knowing(getting a Letter) about it at all. It keeps the Engine cooler.
I would much rather change a 70/dollar fan that's easy compared to an Engine from the increasing fuel costs and cooler means less fuell consumed, less heat on you as well as the Engine.Ride Safe.*Jimi
