So...

At certain RPM's I hear a whining that sounds like its coming from the front wheel/front cylinder area.

At first I thought wheel it was the front bearings cause it kinda sounds like that. But it doesnt whine with the clutch pulled in, only when the bike has drive.

Maybe primary chain?

You guys have any thoughts?

It always happens in 2nd gear around 3500 RPM's.

I noticed something else on my way home from work. Like I said above it whines at 3.5k rpm's in second gear, which is like 35+mph. I went up a hill on the way home and kept it at 3.5k rpm's, but my speed dropped a bit as it should if I keep the rpm's steady, but the whine went away. When I crested the hill still running 3.5k rpm's and the bike sped up a bit, the whine came back.

As I said it sounds like the bearings are going out, or a brake pad is rubbing on a rotor, but it is definitely only doing it when the bike has drive.

Im going to check the primary chain tonight, only thing I can think of off the top of my head.

I would go with the easy stuff first.

Ride the bike for awhile with out using the brake then stop to see if it is hotter than what it should be,, because if its rubbing it should be hot.

Next I would swap out your wheel bearing, even if its not then you have a new one installed.

Hopefully its one of those two!

Not sure if It would be effected by rpm but have heard fuel pumps can whine ? Also heard you could run tranny fluid to clean it out , for a simple fix . Check it out hopefully its something simple!

The front pads will and should be against the rotor, but it shouldn't get really hot from just that.

I thought I read on here a whining can come from the primary needing adjusting? Something to do with clutch no fully disengaging. I can't find the thread though. [mad]

I dont think its the brakes or the bearings. They would whine with the clutch pulled in.

@Netty

Yeah, thats what got me thinking of the primary chain. I seemed to remember reading something like that here at some point

The last thing I do on my bike is listen to it because every time I do I hear something different and freak out that my engine is about to blow up. I now ride with headphones and it is much more enjoyable. 12.5k on the odo and nothing bad has happened yet.

Ha! That's very true! You listen to these bikes long enough, you'll hear everything. The other day I stuck my ear up to the exhaust and heard the ocean:D
