This is what I used to mount 7.62 cal (large) ammo cans to the stock side case mounts on a ULY.

Just put around the mounts, drilled hole at the right spot on the can. Use washer w/ a little silicone on each side to keep it water tight . World good. Only problem can not remove quickly. Have 5 hangers on each bag. Takes about 30 min or so to remove or mount . But I just leave them on.
Weight is not noticed after a couple of rides.

I like the rubber coated clamps ;)
I made mine remove able with keyhole cuts in the racks for the bolt heads to fit thru and then slide down to lock into place, but I never really removed them, and the mounts got sloppy and loose from all the vibrations. So when I fitted the larger 30 mm cans I hard mounted them near the diagonal ribs with loctite and big fender washers to spread out the load on the side if the box like you did. I didn't think to dab on any silicone, tho.

And I think you have 20 mm ammo cans there

7.62 mm is the same as .30 caliber. Those are measurements commonly reffering to rifle calibers with a bullet about 0.3 inches or just over 7.6 millimeters wide, and usually around 150 grains.

"7.62 cal" would mean the projectile is 7.62 inches in diameter.
... Like a cannon ball

That was a test. You passed.

That sounds better than saying I had a case of H.U.A. and not thinking.
Your right mm not cal.
Got the cans off the army. They are why the belts come in for a mini gun.
Thought about the key hole also, but wondered about it locking down good.
Also figured would not be taking them on and off much.

I liked your idea so much I did it too. I used the Hepco & Becker racks already on the bike and ordered a mounting kit from Happy Trails. I got the 20mm cans off EBay and painted them a "black hammered metal" from the Home Despot. [smirk]

Thanks for the idea and pics. I absolutely agree, while the cans seemed absurdly heavy for a bike when I got them, they're hardly noticeable.

this is exactly what im doing with my ss right now. 20mm cans as a set and i also have some awesome nightvision cases i picked up from the surplus store.. fit perfect on either side of the engine.. seen another post on here that looked like water jugs on the front.
also put a nice tall and even adjustable windshield on it.. hoping for some uly bits and pieces and boom... long distance riding machine

Wiley,
I like the way you executed that.
How heavy are the oem luggage by comparison?

Ccdirtrider,
Please post pictures when you get them mounted!

In hand, the ammo cans are a bit heavier but not terribly. On the bike they don't make any difference in weight but a helluva difference in accessibility (top down vs side falling doors on the H&Bs). I also have more confidence in the medal than I did in the hard plastic, with plastic hinges, that was beginning to get brittle from the weather.

I think yours look great! I built mine for 80 bucks.. Went a little lighter... The side bags 34 bucks at Home Depot

fitted on my Ss at the time, smaller cases that night vision goggles come in . got them at the local army surplus store 20 each. super tough and smaller profile.

really looking into options for mounting some front bags as well.. possibly bracing off of the chin fairing bracket and the front isolator... that or im going to invest in some case sliders and mount off of those..
