Do I need to use a clear coat on my frame if i added a coat to one side? The paint was just discolored from a small scuff. There was no gash or cut all the way through the paint. Now the paint is dry and looks pretty good but the texture is rough compaired to the rest of the frame, so im just curious to wether or not i need a clear coat? If so what kind?

i dont know about your job, but i know about clear, if you decide you need it and want to do it yourself, theres this stuff called spray max, its a two part clear in a can. post a pic

Bump!!:D help, i need to know if any one has ever painted there frame with phantom black buell touch up paint and if I need to use a clear cote, like a satin finnish or mat finninh???????? or nothing???

If it was mine I would hit it with real fine grit sand paper to smooth it out. If that mats out the color to much just reshoot the side real lightly.

IMO if your going to clear one side you should do both, otherwise you wont get an even coloring or luster.

It's OEM color, not the OEM paint. The frame is actually powder coated I think. No, you do not clear coat. It will look funny.

I used the graphite frame paint from ASB or Buellparts, which ever one sell it I cant remember.

Matched well ( not perfect), but same as yours it had some texture to it.

I sprayed pretty much everything in front of the right frame puck to the VIN. After the first time I road it had some discoloration from the heat of the headers. When I got back to the house I rubbed it lightly with a green scotch brite pad and then some quick mist wax and a paper towel. Still not as shiny as the factory but its plenty smooth.

Ive pretty much forgotten about painting it and no one has noticed the paint or can tell a difference when I show them. No doubt that the separation from the frame puck helps.

texture changes with age...if you clearcoat is, you need to do the whole frame or atlease the visible parts.

remove seat & covers, tape of engine and off you go.

otherwise just slightly sand the touched up part with very fine paper (wet) and buff it up. ;)

Ok, thanks guys. I did use a scotch pad and i had wd 40 on it. it changed the color a little lighter and thats why i painted it. i dont know if it was the wd40 of the scrubbing. I also did what you said and seporated it by the framwe puck and the color and match is perfect its just the texture. i guess I could spray the other side.

I know i will do a test spray on some thing and then try the light sand paper or new scotch bright pad. i really cant believe how good the paint matches. i just love my bike so much that even though no one else knows its got a diff testure i do and I keep thinking about it. Its really not a big deal so i will take my time so i dont **** it up. Thanks for your help.

Brightbuell-
Do you remember or have the Part Number for the Phantom Black touch up paint? Is it a spray can or a small cam that I can thin and spray?
The 2 minute monkeys at the parts counter at my dealer can't find it...

I did the same thing so i used armor-all on it and rubbed it for an hour with an armor-all soaked rag and it smoothed out really well. I also put armor-all on the other side so they would both be rich looking. Your only other option is to paint the other side. It turned out great and i only did the one side. Just make sure you armor-all both sides and it really works great.

I did not clear coat my frame, in the sun it would have not looked the same, so i opted out.

It sounds like you have "orange peel". If you do, I think you can wetsand the texture with 600-1200 grit,
depending on how vigorous you need to sand. You can use water with the paper. Of course rinse everything the sanding dust slurry hits with water also. You don't want the slurry to bake onto the headers etc.

That might work, when i tried with a green scrubby to soften it, it lightend it up. kinda ashy looking, so thjats why i went the armor-all route. It could work, and if not you could always spray it again.. Also that part# in my earlier post is for the dark 1203 frame.
