Well, I have been lurking for a week - a post here and there. Thought I would introduce myself.
US Air Force, 13 years, hail from Azores Portugal. I have been riding a 2000 Sportster since late 1999, and loving it. I have been hanging out at the Sportster.org forum for many years (lurking lately), looking at how to make my Sportster more fun. I was tinkering with putting some rear sets on it, 180 tire kit, and going Cafe. I recently took the MSF Ridercoach class, and a classmate from Aviano AB had a sweet XB12R that I lusted over for a few weeks. I thought about a 2nd bike for awhile, then I heard about the Buell fire sale. Looked at AAFES (Army Air Force Exchange Service - the PX) for a great deal with no tax, and they were SOLD OUT. That is right - all or Europe was sold out. I got pissed, then made some phone calls. Long story short, I just picked up my XB12SS ($6995) at Faultline HD in Fremont CA, and will stash it at my folks house until I get out of Portugal. I can't wait to start having some fun on this bike - I have wanted one for a few years. If you have any suggestions on first mods, let me know. I have about 8 months until I take it for its first ride.

Welcome! There are a few of us in the bay area right near where you got your bike.

As for the mods, remove the belt guards, reflectors and warning stickers. Maybe some bar end mirrors, breather reroute, and airbox delete.

:(

Take off the hugger/belt guard

bar end mirrors

get put into a medically induced coma for 8 months?? :D

First off - totally agree with the belt guard delete and losing the "loser" reflectors. That butt ugly plate mount is going to get pitched also. If there is no real reason for the belt guards to be there aside from DOT mandate, perhaps they can go. I was looking at modifying them, but losing them all together is a much better idea. I also remember the VAST difference I felt with a K&N filter, pipes, and a rejet. If there is an easy way to do that with EFI, I would love to hear it. As for the coma - I have some Jack and Coke on tap.

Welcome to the Forum Rinky and thank you for your service. [up] Congrats on the Bike and your new Addiction.

California canister has to go!

I'm happy you got the bike you wanted from faultline HD. I had a bit of a hassle trying to get my '09 Ss from them; so I ended up down at Monterey County HD in Salinas, couldn't be happier with my XB12Ss!!!

Beyond just setting a plan in place for mods... the first thing I would strongly encourage you to do is eitehr find someone you can trust to ride it a little bit every now and then, or "Winterize" it for the 8 months storage time. If you just leave the bike in a garage for the next 8 months, you'll have major problems with it when you get back.

1. Tires will have developed flat spots if they aren't rolled periodically.
2. the Cylinder walls can oxidize if you don't pull the plugs and spray some preservative into them (This should be repeated every couple of months imo).
3. Gas will obviously spoil (water condensation etc).
4. Rubber parts can dry rot in that time too.

I know it sucks thinking that someone else is going to be on your sweet new ride before you can.... but I would really seriously consider finding someone to just ride it around the block a couple times ever other week or so..

oh... and to avoid being a Debbie Downer... GRATS on the new ride!!!! [up][up][up]
