I'm finally back on a Buell and it was a complete accident. I had a XB12R for a few years but after being hit by a car, I haven't touched a bike in almost four years. I posted my play toy 4X4 on CL for sale or trade for sport bike. Low and behold I'm offered an '09 1125cr with 4k miles for an even trade. I'm pretty excited.

I feel like I'm so far out of the loop that I've spent the past two days on the forums trying to read up on this bike and common issues. It seems that I'm taking on an electrical nightmare. I know the bike is out of warranty and I don't think the orginal owner had the recall harness upgrade done. Is it still possible for me to have it done at the stealership or am I going to come out of pocket? It seems that everyone's stators are constantly going out. On average every 4-5k miles. The bike is right there so I'm going to keep an eye out. Is the stator really a $600 part? Has anyone found a way to fix the problem for good? With Buell gone and most HD shops not wanting much to do with them, where are you guys finding your parts? Lastly, other than what I've mentioned, what do I need to be on the lookout for? After reading about all of the problems, I'm thinking I just need to trade it for another 12r. Thanks in advance for all of your help guys.

One more thing that just came to mind. Are there any "must have" upgrades or mods that I need to do? I remember doing an airbox mod on my 12r but I have no idea if the 1125cr needs anything like this done. What about "denoiding"?

Is the stator really a $600 part?

No its a little more than that.

where are you guys finding your parts?

www.ebay.com = always has something
www.erikbuellracing.com = ECM and so on
www.americansportbike.com = all kinds of goodies
www.kedadesign.com = exhaust
www.50dro.com = sliders
www.thetuniversity.com = if want to learn to tune it

What about "denoiding"?

Almost a thing of the past now that EBR ECM is out. Buy the Race ECM and will not have to "de-noid". The ECM will take care of several issues, like a buck and jerk at low RPM.

Oh and Welcome to the board!

The stator might not fail. Mine hasn't. There a button the watch your volts. If it is below 13 your in trouble. You can minimize the whole issue by keeping the bike above 4500 rpms. Ebr produced a fix but it's really just an 08 stator....

I don't know, the more I read the more I'm seeing that it's not "if" the stator fails it's when. I'm having trouble finding very many people with over 10k miles on the original. For every one of those there are a dozen that are on their 3rd or 4th. It seems the only real solution is sending $900 to ERB for their "race" stator kit.

I'm actually considering an extended warranty through HD now. They were great when I blew up my 12r motor after only 8k miles a few years back.

By the way I picked up a 08 motor for cheaper than the warranty.
seems like one of two things go wrong vr or stator.

Pick up the clutch fix from EBR that worry will be gone. The clutch weeps at the black puck quite often. I had seals made but they didn't last either. I picked up the replacement kit from ebr put it in in an hour and like new!!!!

Problem is most of the HD places are clueless when it comes to these and they just keep putting the same crap in em. If you can get an 08 set up great if not bag the ebr thing. I have almost 10K on the original stator but it has the relay installed. And don't forget the guys with good stators don't post only the bad ones usually and for good reason as well.If it aint broke don't fix it!!!

@C818919

I was in the Army for seven years, deployed three times and now work overseas contracting. I've learned not to come running for help when something goes wrong. I like to do my due diligence and gather facts beforehand so that I can solve any problem that may come along. Thanks for the insight.

Im ordering the ebr stator kit , on my second stator and the bike has 6000 miles ,2nd stator running 14 + volts with 3000 miles on it.But i dont trust the factory 09 stator at all. i do have a used one off of ebay but see no point in replacing it with another one that could fail or not.I bought it for just in case , on long trips . Just got the ebr clutch kit for my know seeping clutch puck. imo I think traffic and long periods of idling where the bike cannot keep itself cool enough is the main reason the stators burn out.

Update. Bought a 1125cr but not the one I was originally trading for. This one is an '09, 750 miles, original owner. I talked him down to $5500. A few things that concern me:

1.- Recall harness "upgrade" has not been done.
2.- With only 750 miles I was worried about how long it's been sitting. I turn the key and the service engine sign comes on. I ask when the last service was and he said he's only had the oil changed once and it was about a year ago. Obviously changing oil and filter is at the top of my list.

Still, with only 750 miles I don't think I did bad for $5500. Saving up for EBR and stator kit now.

Thats your first service message reset it when you change your oil. If the harness has not been done it has not been reflashed either.
Things I would do:
Change oil
order EBR clutch kit
see if anyone can ecm spy reflash your machine/or order ebr ecm
get a Barker or Keda exhaust
when the stator goes get an ebr stator kit.
all of this will cost under $2K and that would mean you spent $7500 on a bike that retailed for $12,995.
There isn't a bike out there that gives you this kind of enjoyment for that kind of money and they will be hard pressed to out perform your machine too.
I like the high bars and the drop pegs but thats just a personal preforance.
Good luck man!!!!!

Picked up the bike today. It gave me a feeling that my 12r never did. It scared the **** out of me. I couldn't resist the urge to open it up and I felt like that old coyote on a rocket cartoon. You hit 80mph before you even have a chance to **** yourself. I'm taking it to a dealer in Austin this week to have the service done and a good once over. After that I will be doing all of the maintenance, just need to find a service manual. I'm also ordering the EBR ECU tomorrow. I'm hoping this will be something I can do myself. After that I'll order the exhaust and stator kit. Might as well replace it before it leaves me stranded. Thanks for the help guys.
