Hey everybody, I picked up this 05 xb9sx a few weeks ago and have been plagued by this noise. Cold the bike will start, idle and ride fine, the racket starts when it gets hot typically in traffic and this makes me want to believe its my lifters "not lifting" when my oil gets hot and thins out a little. The bike runs great when she's cool and the noise either goes away completely or quiets down if I hit the freeway and get air flowing.
I love this bike and really want to keep her, If I can get any inkling on the nature of the problem before I decide to tear her apart to rotate the engine it would make my day.
Thanks everyone!

Its hard to tell...couple of things 1) this question comes up all the time with new owners, I've asked it once upon a time. The XB's are just noisy...period. The style of drive gears these cams use along with the shape of the cam lobes make them very very noisy. They are the exact same grind as the Harley Davidson SE551 E grind cams that are (well were) available for Sportsters. They perform well, but the Sportster guys hated them because of the noise.

2) when you rev the bike does the sounds stay constant and/or get quieter...you also have to remember that at idle the oil pressure is pretty low which also contributes to valvetrain noise. Bad lifters or collapsed lifter/lifters would get louder and more pronounced as you rev the bike. like this shovelhead motor

My xb9sx is really noisy too, when the shield on my helmet is closed it doesn't sound bad, but with the shield open its really noisy. Its mostly because everything on the bike is hollow, the breather mod makes it worse, sounds like the pushrods are coming thru the throttle body. I had some concerns at first, but accept it for what it is. Not even a D&D could cover up the engine noise.

I just put redshift 567 cams, jims lifters, and new push rods in my bike...guess what...still loud!! LOL
