Lightning Exhaust

Alright Buell lovers I imagine this topic has been covered millions of times but I'm super confused on exhaust systems. I'm a big time ebayer and have been looking into swapping exhaust on my 05 lightning xb12scg. Is there a good place to get exhaust? What do you recomend? What's the procedure in replacing it? I have heard all sorts of stuff from the exhaust having a computer connected to it. Is it a simple task I'm completely at the 1st step. I once had an 01 Buell Blast that had a jardine exhaust sounded pretty good. Definetly have to watch the cost. Wanna stay in the $200-$400 price range. Thanks.

XB exhaust goes like this:
all XB9 and XB12 mufflers interchange all years XB's.
XB9 header pipe assembly smaller OD on the actual headers than the XB12 headers
XB9 muffler does NOT have an interactive power valve.....all XB12 mufflers do. said valve activated by computer controlled module affixed atop the airbox inner cover.
all XB's came factory equipped with lower cowling affixed to dedicated permanent muffler clamps by 7 torx screws. all cowlings and all screws interchange between all models.
all XB mufflers affixed to bottom of motor by 3 large dedicated clamps 2 rear/1 front that affix to motor mount 1 rear/1 front. all clamps and mounts interchange between all XB models.
some mufflers like hawk/drummer come with dedicated cowling attachment brackets as per the factory....others do not.
which muffler sounds/looks/performs the best? personal preference.
mufflers can be removed/installed with bike sitting on floor on side-stand but there is a specific procedure. get it wrong and you'll have a hell of a mess on your hands.

jardine carbon is in your price range..i have one and it is VErY light.
jardine aluminum is cheaper, still light but not as light as the carbon

sound and performance seems to be the same to me.. I own both versions and you would be happy with either as long as you keep them packed.. run them too long with the packing blown out and they will vibrate the rivets off.. no big deal actually, re-packing them isn't a big deal and video tutorials are on youtube.

jardines do well on the dyno but not as well as say, the old micron systems (good luck finding one) main thing they offer over the other mufflers is weight reduction. The carbon is super light.. only slight downside is the chin mounts on the jardine, they are steel and not as light as they could be for the price of the kit but, you could drill them out to lighten them a bit more if you cared. I just left mine as they were. aluminum mounts would have been lighter and still done the job I think.

they got good semi customs out there like Drummer, lighter than stock, good sound and power and prestige.. its your choice.

Thanks guys I definetly don't wanna get into a big mess or worse mess the bike up I just want a little louder and deeper sound. But I don't want to have to go without the lower chin fairing. It will be a little bit before I decide to do anything with the exhaust maybe next winter. Thanks again.

I have a Jardine GP1 Muffler and I really liked the sound! but that Fiberglass started to break down after years of abuse, so I cut the pipe where it turns up by the footpeg (it was very scratched up) and shortened the slip-on can and repacked the muffler. A little louder now, but I really dig the look! Always loved the sound of the Jardine, and they do a lot with Buell! Mine definitely gained me some power after a Jardine muffler, new intake and a dyno-tune.

Jardines are not bad and for the price, they can't be beat, but since you have time, do some research into the different exhausts. I know American Sportbike did an exhaust shoot out that was pretty thorough and you could download sound clips of all the exhausts so just use google and see what you can find. Just my 2 cents, I enjoy the sound of my Dean Adam's exhaust over the Jardine I had on it. It has a deeper tone and a tid bit quieter than the jardine.

Percentage of mine installed overall, .002534% so yeah, they're somewhat rare. Effective, not necessarily pretty to look at (especially the early ones) and fairly well built.

I have to say, the Drummer SS exhaust is absolutely awesome... Nice sound, solid construction, great fitment, solid performance. It will cost you a bit more than the Jardine, but coming from someone who had the Jardine RT1 with EBR ECM, it is worth it.

I just installed a Jardine aluminum system on my XB9R and I really like the sound but it breathes so freely that it pops and back fires on deceleration. Is that typical of all the aftermarket exhausts? Does the EBR race can pop and backfire on decal as well?

The Jardine really is a significant weight reduction, and the extra power was easily noticed. I run all of the brackets and the stock chin spoiler.

If you installed the proper ECM tune the decel popping should be ironed out. All after market exhausts will decel pop if they are not properly tuned.
