I have this plan from something (bike related) I do not think has been patented yet. Its easy enough that within this year i should be able to create all by myself and it not be expensive (too expensive anyways). I want to get a patent.

Problem is... Im a 20yr college student trying to get by and by no way possible be able to afford getting a patent. Thats where I would like to propose a partnership with one of you. If you would think you are interested then let me know. I would love for one of our bigger members and members that actively sell products so that i know that they will have alittle bit more knowledge and i can trust them more.

Im just worried that this idea will get taken soon and i be left out. It seems so simple and easy to me. It fixes a problem when riding.

I'm curious, alas I'm low on funds too
I'm 22 and done with my psych degree some I'm paying back loans and supporting the daughter.

I also have ideas I'd like to patent just no way to implement them at this time

is it just buells or all bikes?cosmetic or performance?other than patent money what other funds and approx how much and what would be the split

have you done a patent search to see if it is covered by anything else? http://www.freepatentsonline.com/search.html is a good place to look. im interested in your idea but actually financing your patent Im guessing i would back out. no offense to you but it takes a pretty damn good product to make any kind of real money. and as you may have noticed it isnt cheap. just the patent is expensive but if you are serious you need to hire a good patent attorney to write it for you, otherwise you stand to lose if it really is that good of an idea.

This is the kind of stuff i love, entrepreneurship is the bomb. But i, like the others that have posted...am 21 and poor as balls from student loans. I have a marketing degree, and would be willing to help you market your product when the time comes though.

Its for all bike and its not really either. It would be more cosmetic though but its not for looks. Patent money is what im thinking of and trying to sell the patent to a bike motorcycle company OR make the product and sell it online.
Split? My idea- Your money. how about 60/40? Its obvisously discussable.

You dont need to go with a company to Pat, your Pat!
You can do it all yourself without giveing your idea away to a company before it gets it's pat!

In some states they are protected, and I have heard they can use your idea before it's Pat hit! If this is wrong so be it its what I have heard.
I just do them myself.
I wish you the best of luck on your new idea!
Just a FYI.

Here's the deal with this sort of thing......

Patents are EXPENSIVE and basically useless.

Once you've gotten it patented and release it on the market, if it becomes popular at all, there will be 100 different copies of it on the market the following week. China doesn't care about our patent laws, there's no way to enforce them.

Your best bet, if you are pretty sure it WILL SELL is....

*Get capital / investors for it up front.
*Keep it a VERY GOOD SECRETE
*Mass produce the hell out of it in various flavors.
*Find a TON of vendors for it.
*Make it AFFORDABLE (this will come with mass production).
*Once you have a LARGE stock of it and have many vendors ready to sell it, RELEASE IT WITH MASSIVE MARKETING ALL AT ONCE (remember, all your venders kept quiet about it till you were ready to release it).

The idea is to have a shit ton load of it in stock and release it all at once keeping totally quiet about it till that point. The reasoning for this is you'll corner the market on that product for a while and you'll build your name for that particular product and make a quick buck (maybe a lot). Then the counterfeiters will start popping up (and they WILL), hopefully by that point you would have built a name for that product and now you can lower your price further and associate your name as the originator and perhaps even improve it slightly and always be ahead of the counterfeiters. You'll also be able to market yourself as "the Original" and be able to say "Don't be fooled by "the counterfeit parts".

Good luck with your venture, remember if it is a good idea to NOT SIT ON IT TOO LONG. I've sat on great ideas many times over only to see my ideas eventually pop up on the market and missed that money making boat.

Thanks for all the advice guys.
Straw i planned on getting the patent first so no worries.

BuellerPilot, With this type of product im thinking of making, it would be better to be put in at the factor while they are making the bikes.

Im talking about the future. ALL bikes will have this!

(if i make it, get all the bugs out and it works as i want it too.)

[up] Excellent then, getting your idea to OEM's would then justify a patent.

Good luck!

Please, no bike seat belts!

or windshield wiper, or fuel tank airbags :D:D:D

Stop intriguing us :) Just tell us what it is WE WON'T TELL ANYONE:p

If seriously "God bless you Loki". Go do this and be on the top[up]

You go Loki!! If I wasnt 24 and poor I'd help out.. But ya... most I could do is just spread the word once you have all the legal stuff figured out. SF bay and SD networking ftw!!

I'll second BuellerPilot. I too have some radical ideas...lucky for you they don't pertain to bikes (although I comtemplated pursuing translucent plastics for sportbike fairings back in 98'-some still have not been done). My sister is a patent lawyer and gave me similar advice to the above poster. The patent is largely time consuming, expensive, and relatively useless in the end.
