I was doing about 75 down the highway when the engine light came on and then all of the gauges reset themselves. The speedometer and odometer needles both went to 0 and then back to normal, all the engine lights turned on then off and the mileage trip counter and clock reset. I got home and the bike started up fine. It has a brand new battery less than a week old.

The bike has also been getting super hot under the seat even on short rides and I don't know if that is a separate or related issue. I have the pipes wrapped. The seat gets so hot that my butt and back of my legs feel burnt when I get done riding.

Please help me diagnose these problems.

Check your grounds and fuses. This is clearly a connection issue. Battery ground, ground to frame and ground on front of the frame can all effect this. I would start with the battery connections seeing as your gauges reset. Since you just replaced the battery I would suspect one of your bolts came loose and is being tempermental.

that happened to me last year.....loose battery connection on my bike. and this past month, poor preformance, loss of power.......loose battery again. Damm those gremlins! I'm not saying it couldn't be something else, just most likely a bad connection.

tight connections on battery sounds like the ez fix. same thing happened to me after re-installing battery after winter. put a little thread loc on em.

[up] on tighten battery
[up] also tighten ground strap under seat
[up]and tighten anything that looks loose! :D

Thanks for all the electrical tips, will be working on this over the weekend.

Any idea on the heat? Does this motor just run really hot? I have seen aftermarket products such as heat shields and right side air scoops, are they worth the money?

I bought the rss and the heat shield from odiehawk and in my opinion they are worth the money. I also bought the seat heat shield but havent installed it yet just put the air box one on.[up]

Update...negative terminal connection was loose, tightened with no more issue. Also changed oil to full synthetic 20w-50 as discussed on other threads. Still debating on right side scoop and heat shield. Maybe get those in the spring before it gets hot again. Running really good again Thx everyone :)

My Uly has been doing the same thing - the positive terminal bolt keeps loosening up. I think I need to consolidate the extra ring terminals and go with a Fuzeblock for the accessories. I'm going to be doing a major maintenance weekend soon, so I'll probably do it then.
