After 1900 miles and one trip to the track, I decided to remove my stock Pirelli tires and install a set of Michelin Pilot Pure's. The Pirelli's are fine tires but the front was sliding around on me a bit at the track, so I figured it was time for better track tires. Plus I'm a tire and suspension engineer, so I geek out on tires.
I installed the tires myself on a normal car tire mounting machine. Unlike some other Michelin tires I've used, these were quite easy to mount. I went for a ride this morning on Angeles Crest to break them in.
First thing I noticed was the ride quality. Rolling feel was better than the Pirelli's, making the highway part of the drive to the Crest much nicer. Impacts aren't as sharp, and the damping seemed to be a bit better.
Steering feel was also much better. The bike charged direction very well. Turn in was linear, it didn't have any of the "fall" into the corner like the Pirelli's. Once in a corner small changes were very nice.
Sense I was on the street I didn't push it too hard (just hard enough to remove all the chicken strips ;D ). The profile of the rear tire is more V shaped than the Pirelli and it seems to be more stable in a corner. Small angle changes can be made very predictably.
Overall I'm super happy with these tires. At $260 delivered you can't go wrong. I'll probably order a second set of tires soon. I'm not sure what the mileage will be with these, but it probably won't be enough for many people.
