Just bought my first Buell, '03 firebolt xb9r. first bike for me so i'm a definite newbie. just wondering what the best engine oil to use. the factory manual recommends H.D. Multi-Grade 20W-50. is this a must or can i use others (such as castrol semi-synthetic)? any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

I use Royal Purple 20w50. There is quit a few other threads about Oil spread around here on the forum. I would advise checking them out. Alot of input.

I have had real good luck with Mobil 1 15w-50 full synthetic. both in the primary/trans and the engine.
the bike has over 50k on it now, and seems as strong as ever.

15 50 mobil is used alot in harley motors with great results probably half the cost of 20 50 so called motorcycle oil

Whatever you do, make sure the oil you put in the bike meets specifications (ie oil approved for tranny and clutch and not standard engine oil)

I use Amsoil MCV 20w50 in both my engine (swing arm) and Primary/tranny/clutch. It meets all specifications so I only have to buy the one oil for everything.

is the royal purple you all are using formulated for v-twins or just a synthetic?
I use the RP Max Cycle 20W50 in both holes and am very happy with it. The Max cycle is designed for use in bikes.

What are the specifications on the bottle I should look for? Trying to find something cheaper than HD brand oil.

Kinda off topic, but I just put RP in my car. ZOMG, this stuff is awesome! We'll see how long it lasts though.

Onelogue, it should say on the bottle if its approved for trannys or not. You should look for synthetic V twin oil.
