Dragsville LeFox, I know you are rather competitive in Martial Arts and have a excellent skills set, a transition to BJJ may make it easier on your knees and allow you to compete.
If its a new art for you altogether I easily see you looking at it as a challenge to develope your skills so that you are able to compete again.

As a strength & conditioning trainer myself I know how it is to be able to demonstrate to clients/students what you expect and it is a great feeling to lead by example.

I hope you can continue to teach with the aid of some senior BB's. Your passion and love of the arts and competeing is evident and it would be a shame to lose a teacher such as yourself.

I have lived with chronic pain for the last 15 years.
I have a partially hyrniated disc in my lower sacrium that can and has caused me to be immobile for days at a time on the floor, (seriously not able to move due to back spasms).
Not being a fan of western medicine I don't take painkillers and usually deal with it by using the most important muscle when I train...the brain!

oh and I self medicate with pot!
;)

Sorry to hear it Lefox. Losing one of your passions would've been bad enough - but to hear of both - major bad news.

i've known people that went both ways with knee replacements, 1 got them done as or after they should have been done, had good results, but i don't think he remembers what a good knee is supposed to feel like(had both replaced.) and i've known two people to get them done prior to causing bad pain and discomfort; one had good results, the other had bad results to the point he had a second operation. I think a lot of it deals with who is doing the replacement and their track history so to speak.

good luck bro, i'll be waiting for that day to come for me...

Rest, Ice, and elevate between rides and workouts. And I don't know your history, but you may be able to find a orthopod to do a hemiarthroplasty rather than a total. Unless you have really bad osteoarthritis or something. Rest, ice, and elevate after every workout/ride and tylenol and ibuprofen combined for pain/swelling reduction. Hang in there man...You still have options.

Fourty...
