Hello and thanks for your help. I am going to purchase a wrecked 2003 XB9R. I am going to put it in a Redneck frame and i want to run a carb. I know the question has been posted before, but I didn't see any solid answers.
I know it is going backwards and I may loose power. The bike is already wrecked so I am not ruining a Buell.
What do I need and what problems may i encounter? I just want to have a buell powered chopper and this is the platform I found. Thanks for any help.

Why use a carb? Why not a newer side draft fuel injection off a dyna wideglide or something along those lines and have harley or buell work with you on the right mapping?

There should be no reason why you couldnt yank the entire intake assembly from a pre-EFI Sportster and slap it on there.

Yup just take off all the EFI and put on a matching Carb, you will need to work with the jetting just like any motor but it should be straight forward.

Basically-Pull off your EFI, get a new carb and manifold, get yourself and Ultima ignition set up, Hook it up and run the piss out of it....

Why use a carb?

I looked into this same setup and to run the EFI is nice but in the end it is a nightmare as you have so much additional wiring to try and hide basically in the wide open. Carbs might not run as good or give the same power but for what the setup will be it will still run great and look ten times better cleaner with no wiring [up]

Thanks everybody. Low - you summed it up, I know FI is better all around, I love it on my bagger. But for a mutant, I want it as simple as I can. I dont want to wory about the wiring, computer and everything else. Plus I can tinker with the jetting, I don't have the equipment to tune the FI. Thanks, if anyone else has anything to add I would appreciate it.

I am in the exact same boat as BFD305. I got a wrecked '03 XB-9 and plan on doing the same exact thing (put engine in a rigid bobber frame and want/need to convert to carb & intake). My question is - does anyone have any speicifc recommendations for carb? I've heard/seen a recommendation for a Mikuni HSR (which I have always heard very good things about), and others have said grab an intake/carb combo from a '04-'06 Sporty (which would be a Keihan CV carb I believe). Anything more specific than that? If not, this is a very good start. Thanks.

I don't have the equipment to tune the FI

You don't have a computer and $50? That's all it takes.....FI would be better in every way.....but anyway sportster parts should bolt right up...

Enough with the shit talking about carbs. People do tons of different things to their Buells and that is the beauty of it. Every single carb post on here is greeted with whining about how stupid they are or why they're doing carbs because it sucks and electronic fuel injection is better. THEY WANT TO DO CARBS. STFU about not doing carbs.

The people who ask about doing carbs are usually mechanics who realize what they're getting into. This guy SPECIFICALLY says he knows he's going backwards and is still doing the project.

Jesus.

I know people can do whatever they wish, I still gave some help...I think many people just are sort of intimidated by fuel injected, or are used to carbs and don't want to do anything else. That's fine, just wondering what the reason is as he said he didn't have the proper equipment to tune, all he needs is a computer, ecmspy is free. If he still wants to use carbs that's fine...

Pretty cool! Weird seeing an inverted fork setup with clip ons and a ton of rake lol. Not my style but it is very cool looking and definitely an awesome garage project! That motor looks at home in your frame :)
