does the engine need retuning after this, for all you who have done it can you post some pics...thanks

What mod are you doing? Cutting holes in your airbox? Or the air box eliminated kit?

But a quick answer is no...
But here is some food for thought. If you have a 03-05 xb do not cut or use the kit. Just replace the air filter with a k&n

And if you have a 06-up you can use the kit but keep in mind it's going to make a sh-t load of intake noise. With no real gain.

I got a 04 R model with race ecm, Carbon Jardine, K&N.. I de-snorkeled it and cut holes in the inner airbox and Im breather by-passed.

Makes a bit more noise, lost a little bit of bottom-end tourqe and feels like I gained some on my top-end accelleration... In my case, I wouldnt say it was a "no gain".. I feel like it was more of a "trade-off".

I dont think it would show up well on a dyno, but in actual use you can feel a difference and Im happy with it. I noticed that XBs dont dyno real well.. Im guessing it has something to do with the lack of ram-air on most dynos.
Some have said that the older ram-air models didnt really make much difference but I have a hard time beliving that because every time I made a mod to the ram-air system, I felt a noticable "change"..so, Im sure the old ram-air system did SOMETHING, just not sure WHAT. ha ha

Here's mine:

I am very happy with it. Came out very clean, holds the filter well, looks good, etc. No glues or other crap to come loose eventually and get sucked in to the intake. Only cost a few bucks for the hardware too at ACE.

With that said, I put the cover back over it (for now) as it was running way too lean and ran like crap. A huge decrease in power. It was like it was lugging all the time. So until I tune it I have the cover snapped over top of it. And it was CRAZY LOUD too. Hurt my ears at WOT throttle.

what ecm do you have?

Stock with race maps flashed to it.

When the bike was 100% stock it ran very lean and hot, spit and sputter, really didn't run good. After buying it I wanted to sell it since it ran so poorly. Then I flashed the race maps, changed to the iridium ngk plugs that are one heat range cooler, and did the breather reroute(not all 3 at once). Each time I did one of these it got better and better. I'd say these three things fixed 90% of my problem and I love the bike now. Then I did the K&N and it was basically no different. Then I did the air box mod and it was way too lean again.

Your gascap hurts my eyes everytime I look at it...

For those who say the air box mod does nothing, from my experience, it sucks in a **** load more air. I'm excited for when I finally tune my bike for this mod(and exhaust) it should run pretty strong. These aren't the fastest bikes ever but they are strong and a blast o ride.

I would like to put this myth to bed, and hopefully give the next person some food for thought....

The stock ECM flash is one of the most forgiving map to run in your Buell. When your Buell motor runs hot temp wise, 180 degs and its not 100+ degs outside or a constant 5500 rpm's under 55 mph's. the stock map richens up. To try to cool the motor
9-10 times its one or three things or all.
1) your spark plug gap is to small and you need to open it up
2) your timing is restarted to far
3) your tps is off, so your map is off.

When your bike starts popping is because your dumping more fuel...ie running rich
That is why one of the suggestions to stop decel pops is to cut fuel when not in wot I.e make lean.

Now if your valve train is clacking and your getting predestination and your headers are blue down to the collector. Then your running lean. Or your stumbling on the topend like its hitting the rev limiter, but the rpm's are not high enough. But I doubt you would complain because your bike would run like a raped ape.
But can and will blow up.

But op. what your doing is fine....And will not hurt your motor.

I know what I'm talking about, the bike was detonating because it was running so hot. It was not running rich. I checked static timing and it was correct. I also reset tps several times. What made it run better was the race maps(running richer). The bike used to get so hot that the frame would burn(not literally) my legs through my jeans. It was too hot to touch through my jeans. Now it's cooler and it doesn't do that.

If it was running rich it would run cooler, not hotter, and it would not detonate, it would flood and bog down. Popping is completely different than detonation.

Snrusnak... I'm not directly talking about your situation. I am only using your quote instead of finding one in another post.

But now I do have a question for you...have you ever looked at the difference between the race map and stock map?
If so you would not have made this comment....

What made it run better was the race maps(running richer)

Next thing your going to say is the fan comes on sooner to cool the motor.

I have, and the race map is richer. Would you like me to post a screen shot of the 2005 stock map vs 2005 race map?

And the fun runs significantly less now.

Well I just realized I think I've been looking at the maps backwards. I was looking at the fuel maps as if the higher number the more fuel, but it's the higher the number the more air, right? Air/Fuel?

This doesn't make any sense to me. How would a leaner fuel mixture cause it to run cooler?

I've thoroughly confused myself now lol. The higher the number in the ecmspy map is that leaner or richer?
