so i am the proud new owner of a 2003 Firebolt XB9R. i can't tell you how much I am loving this bike, but there are a few issues i want to get corrected asap.
1. the idle is running under 1k and seems to lug at times, most noticeably tonight when i parked it and the headlights were also dimming on and off, is this a problem or is this normal?
2. the guy before me (or before him) installed a jardine slip-on and i think its shot. it is loud and there is alot of popping on decel. i am having a hard time finding aftermarket exhaust that don't cost a fortune. should i try to find an oem muffler?
3. once (2) is resolved, should i get the injectors remapped at the dealership or get a fuel commander or the like? how hard are these to use? i absolutely want something idiot-proof so i don't eff up my bike, so i'm hesitant to start messing with these kinds of devices

thanks for any help anyone can offer

or, if its easier, if someone could direct me to links that answer these questions, it would be greatly appreciated.

1st i would locate ur 77 connecter, the regulator plug, and see if its corroded, burnt, melted OR if it has been updated. if its updated ur in good shape.

look for a right side air scoop, as well as EcmSpy

8 year old bike? get new battery if its not new

heres a good video for resetting the tps, with the jardine or any other pipe

welcome too the forum

also, as far as the Jardine... is it aluminum? if so, i've heard they don't last very long before they literally pull themselves apart... look it up here on the forum. I have a carbon fiber one and love it tho. I love how loud it is (Jardines will be very loud, one of the loudest). The popping on decel is because the bike isn't tuned properly. ECMSpy is your best bet for this. I can send you the program and instruction manuals etc to get yourself started, and there are a few WELL written threads on here which will also help. Also, as previously stated, ECMSpy will help with throttle position sensor (TPS) which may be the cause of your low idle. Once the TPS is reset, you set the idle speed to what it should be (the above video or your owners manual tells you how to adjust the idle speed).

You're gonna keep on loving your bike, and it only gets better once you get into it with ECMSpy and get to know your bike.

So, to solve your problems:

1: Easy fix, adjust the idle screw. Better fix, reset TPS then adjust idle.

2: Jardines are loud, but need to be repacked after 5000 miles according to the manual. (More info on this on the forum). The popping can be solved mostly by a tune-up using ECMSpy (Don't pay for what's free!)

3: Solved by 2.

Enjoy, hope this helps!

thanks for the answers guys.

a few more q's....

1. is it ok to order the ecmspy cable off ebay? or is there a forum-preferred vendor?
2. i am short on funds for while, so until i can figure out what to do about the exhaust, is it ok to run it like this?
3. whick would be a better route to go: go back to stock exhaust or get another jardine?

1. Got mine off eBay, works great! Cheap too.
2. It's ok, but the backfiring will only help to tear apart the Jardine. The strong vibrations and extra force is more than normal riding. Your bike has an ECM that learns and adapts to new surroundings and attachments. If you drive easy (2500-3000 RPM with cruising throttle) for 20-30 mins, the ECM will adjust to the pipe somewhat. This may have been done already, and the ECM may be as far adjusted as it can be, in which case this obviously would not help at all, but it's easy enough and worth a shot. Even if it has been done before, it will not completely get rid of the backfiring, area-specific fuel map adjustments (ECMSpy) are about the only thing for that.
3. I love my Jardine, I don't even think twice about changing it. Came with the bike, and I'm glad it's Carbon Fiber, so I know it will last. From what I've heard, you lose low/mid-range torque with the Jardine compared to the stock. I'll take the power loss for the sound gain, perhaps just personal preference.
