I found a vague picture on page 55 (Appendix D page D-11) . I should be able to figure it out from that. After all, it only need to make it about 12-16" through the frame. If I can't figure it out from this, I probably shouldn't be wrenching on my bike.

Is there a way to remove/install the stock muffler without loosening the rear axle and removing the tensioner?

^^^^^^^^ 7/16 deep on a extension will get to it with out taking off the tensioner as the 9bolt said.

Looks like someone is going to be buying a socket on a swivel. ;)

Which reminds me, I probably need to get an axle nut tool, as I will be replacing the rear tire pretty soon and powdercoating the rear wheel.

Are we talking about a dedicated 7/16 swivel socket or a universal joint swivel?

Nonetheless, with the tight quarters on an XB, I'm sure a set of dedicated swivel sockets would be a welcome addition.

I'm just trying to avoid adding to my extensive collection of expensive, only used once, specialty tools I've acquired over the years. Anyone need a socket to swap out the trans output flange on a 68 BMW 2002? Or a crank end play tool for an aircooled VW motor? And the list goes on... lol

You can never have too many tools.....

I use a socket on a universal joint. Don't make this too hard for yourself, if you have a socket set all you need is a universal joint which isn't a one time use tool.

I'll add to that list of barely used specialty tools with:

... a dual SU carb air intake measurement tool for a 1975 Rover 3500S. Lightly used, mostly oxidized. I also have the custom made offset wrench to adjust the idle.

You are correct, I have like 3 of every thing I just cant find things so having 3 of each does help.

Yeah, that's not a problem. I have a 3 drawer toolbox dedicated to just sockets and ratchets alone. I don't have dedicated swivel sockets, but maybe I will get some anyways. :) Going into Sears is always a bad thing for me, as I NEED to check out the tool section for some tool or set I don't have. I'm considering putting together to toolbox just for Harley/Buell work, so I'm not digging through my big box and making a mess of it.

So the 7/16 deep socket with a universal and long extension made short work of the rear straps. It almost makes pulling the tensioner pulley seem pointless. Anyhow, I pulled the Drummer off and will be installing the stock muffler this weekend. Thanks for the advice!

I was a bit alarmed to find the elbow for the Drummer came apart from the front part of the muffler. However, closer inspection shows the "break" is a little too perfect. Maybe a slip joint? I tried downloading the instructions from the kdfab.com webpage, but my iphone won't let me. I'll download them next time I'm on a computer.

Don't encourage me. I'm actually trying to pare down my possessions and simplify my life. A year ago I emptied out my wrench drawers and took stock how many sets of wrenches I had. I wound up giving some (sets) away to some friends who were still trying to fix their cars with pliers and butterknives. Lol

Dual meters with the ball floats. had to remove the air cleaner and connecting tubes, then clamp them across both SU intakes and adjust. Took at least 6 adjustments on each carb to get them right since one adjustment affects the other carb slightly.

Just installed painted exhaust :) Put those three metal strings so that I can easily remove exhaust without removing the belt tensioner. I also installed new right side scoop. Now I'm waiting for short tail kit to arrive, and summer :) Just noticed/remembered today that my bike is 07, not 06 :D
