So I bought an 03 xb9 with 7k miles. a couple days ago. Love it so far. Basically it has not been riden in about three years. Oil however was changed in October. but no miles have been put on it since then. Should I go ahead and change it or just wait for 10k miles to come?

Also just curious.. what would you guys say an 03 xb9 with 7k miles is worth? I paid $2500 so im hoping i got a good deal..

CHANGE THE OIL, salesmen lie, plus you can see how the internals are, sounds like a good price, after the oil change you will know more

It was from a private seller and I got the paperwork stating an oil change was done at a harley shop in October.

Most of the damaged drain plugs have been from HD techs following the torque recommendations in the manual, change the oil, if there are any issues, you will know now, rather than later

That's pretty much it, a new "O" for the drain plugs, but I just use Teflon tape and make an "O" ring for mine, also, the engine takes 2 1/5 quarts in the swingarm, and 1 quart in primary, make sure to almost fill the oil filter before spinning it on

What weight oil should be used in the swingarm and primary? I live in Wisconsin, so normal summer temps of around 70-90, not sure if that matters for oil weight at all. Going to change mine tomorrow so I would like to know too.

son of a bitch! this is the finest start to a morning i've had in weeks. nice steamy hot cup of fresh maxwell house....and an oil discussion!

can't tell for sure without a pic of your new acquisition but i would say you got an excellent deal as prices have increased substantially on buell XB's this year.

PLease for the love of God and all that is holy within your soul DO NOT overtighten the drain plugs. Do NOT use a torque wrench on them. Tighten by feel. If you think it isn't tight enough ride it 10 miles and check the plugs again. Just please dont overtighten

p.s. do not overtighten drain plugs

Lesley... so are you saying I shouldn't overtighten the drain plugs? ;-)

Since I am also new to Buell, I'm thinking should we keep Harley guys away from our Buells?

Lesley... so are you saying I shouldn't overtighten the drain plugs?

just talked to him and he's a bit under the weather this week. what he was saying is that your owners manual listed something along the lines of 45 ft.lbs or recommended torque for the primary and swingarm drain plugs. they are interchangeable. THAT # IS INCORRECT!! using a torque wrench on a drain plug is utter waste of time and these plugs have o-ring on them as well. just clean plug well, clean off drain hole area, install and snug it up. it's all about feel and you'll know when it's snug...you can feel that it's right.

I didn't even put thread sealant on my drain plugs just snugged em up and gave it a bump on the wrench with my hand. No Leaks, No Drips, and Stays tight...the heat will tighten a bolt especially steel bolt in aluminum...DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN!:D LOL

I put a ring of blue loctite on just for good measure and hand tightened it. Between that, the heat, the o-ring and expansion, pretty unlikely its going to ever come loose on its own.
