Hey guys, new owner here. Just bought this bike last week but already having problems. I'll try to keep it short and simple. Buy built track bike. Test ride was fine. Guys says its an 05 9r with other year parts. Has airbox delete mod w/ KN filter and Jardine RT1 pipe. Take it on the highway and notice it loses power around 4-4.5k rpms. Also notice its running a little rich. Replace fouled plugs(champion RA8HC) with DCPR8EIX and new 8mm Ironmachine wires. Also buy new battery. Do TPS reset as instructed by youtube tutorial. Start bike, idles low, fluctuates 600s-800s rpms. Can still smell the fuel(rich) Let warm to 140 degrees. Try to adjust the idle to ~1100 but gets richer as I do. Get to around 1000-1050 and at this point I can see the fumes coming out the exhaust and it reeks. Redo TPS a few times but no change. NGKs already fouled so buy new RA8HC and DCPR9EIX plugs. Havent put either it yet. Bought the 9s thinking a hotter plug might help. At this point I want to try replacing the TPS but not sure on the part number. Oh and the guy said it was a 984 but but the side of the engine says Thunderstorm 1203. Just noticed this the other day. The ECM # is N0306 02A8 02331(top barcode), BX9US20CB060(bottom barcode) with firmware is BUECB060. He also modified the maps. I read visually there isnt any difference. Its all internal. Could it actually be a 984 but with a 1203 cover? My main concerns are what should I do next and how do I find what size it really is?

Welcome!

If it's been remapped (especially by just some buddy with a copy ECM spy) I'd bet that's the reason for the rich mix & power dead spot.

If it's been a track bike, it's also not a surprise if the original engine case cover has been replaced. 12s redline @ ~7000rpm & 9s @ ~ 7500rpm due to their shorter stroke. VIN code digits 6&7 are engine codes: 12 is for 9s & 14 is for 12s (unless it's a Cali bike, then I'm not sure).

According to the VIN on the frame its a 984 but that doesnt mean he got the frame and motor together. Are the XB frames interchangeable ? Are there any markings on the engine itself that will tell me? Also I found some TPS part numbers. Do any of these sound right? TPS213, 29537-99Y, P0279.3AA

I have an 2005 XB12Scg and if I remember correctly the "TPS213" will work with 2003-2006 and it changes with the 07's and up. Not sure about the other numbers. There are a couple of "part reference" post that can be found on here.

Good luck.

NGK 9's are colder than NGK8's. You'd dont want 8's because they don't leave you much room for error if you lose and intake seal and go lean.

BUECB is 2003 XB9 only. BUECB060 is the race firmware...meaning it's a 2003 XB9 Race ECM.

Flash a stock EEPROM and see what happens. First save the existing EEPROM and post it up here for us to look at.

I'll look into TPS213. The part number on mine is 38644-00 but i couldnt find anything on it.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought it was the other way around. I'll get my EEPROM up tonight. Is there a way to add attachments or just post it as a message? Not sure how its going to turn out.

Bought a new sensor, installed it, reset TPS to 5.3 and now it immediately stalls. RPMs are a lot lower. ECMspy put it around 400-500.

I did notice the notches on the inside of the sensor were a little off to the existing one and when I connect to ECMspy my degrees read 6.0 when I left it at 5.3. I used TPS213 as its the only one I could fine.

Hopefully this is what youre looking for:

Talked to the previous owner. He said it is a 984 just with a 1203 cover. He also the said the maps were professionally done by a shop in TN. He doesn't remember who.

When I get home from work I'm going to try set the degrees a little higher to keep it running then set the idle after it warms up. Will end up with a number way off from 5.3-5.5 but I read some buells are like that. Are there are any other reset procedures besides JDs youtube vid? I dont have the owners manual so not sure what it would say in there.

That timing table has been altered from both Stock and Race maps; the fuel maps are different as well.

Are you sure you did the TPS reset properly? Back off the set screw, twist throttle a few times to ensure it's fully closed, click reset, adjust out to 5.3°-5.5°, start engine, wait for the idle to settle, adjust idle speed to 1100rpm.

I think so. Back the screw all the way out, reset TPS and then adjust it to 5.3-5.5. Start engine but immediately dies. RPMs are too low to keep running, 400-500 range. Before I replaced the sensor it idled around 700-800.

One thing I noticed after I replaced the sensor and back the screw all the way out it still read like 0.4 degrees. It never reached 0.

I did another reset the other day and actually got the bike running. Idled around 700-800, let it warm up further than 140 degrees, increased the idle a little more and let get warmer. Then it jumped to 1400k [confused] so I immediately backed it off to ~1k and let sit for a bit. Took it around the block a few times and it felt really good except it stumbled when coming to a stop. So I let sit for a few days waiting to get a chance to take on the highway. I wanted my girlfriend to go with my just in case. Yesterday I fire it up and connect to ECMspy. The idle is lower than where I left it and the rpms would fluctuate going back and forth between open and closed loop. I rolled on the throttle after it took forever to warm up and it revd fine so I rode a few blocks up to the DMV to get it inspected and registered and noticed popping from the throttle body. How could I go from rich to lean just like that. Took on the highway. Got up to around 60mph fine but if I gave it a little gas 1/4 or less and it stumbled. I could get passed the stumble about 1/2 throttle and accelerate. Came to a stop light and it sounded like ****. Popping while I revd it. Pulled into Lowes to get some stuff and notice one the hoses for some kind of breather setup was disconnected. Addressed the shoty craftsmanship by replacing part of the hose and adding some clamps. The hose feeds to some kind of catch can with a small filter on the end. I attached a pic of what it looks like. I fixed it up hoping that might the issue but the ride home was the same, ran like **** and popped at the intake. Reset the TPS again this morning and now Im back to where I was. Wont even start at 5.5 degrees. Try setting it to 6 and idles around 700 and running rich. Wish I would have never reset the TPS the first time. Its been a headache ever since.

the vent tubing and filter is almost the exact set up i have for the crank case breather mod just as on the forum here. this may be nothing but also may be something... the problems you have with the rpm sounds alot like my new bike woes, minus the fact that im on a 12Ss and had occasional overheating as well.
16637_20130717230436_L.jpg

noticed on mine there were several spots where the vibration and improperly secured wire harness caused rub spots through the insulation on the wires.. one bunch just happens to have everything in it.. temp, O2, injectors, tps, all of it.
16637_20130717222752_L.jpg

also spots where those sensors had other damage

what i discovered while watching ecmspy and talking with other forum members here is how my bike was in and out of loop constantly, warm and cold. started looking at each sensor for something but could never find anything obvious.
16637_20130717223626_L.jpg

had to look alot closer to find these spots rubbed raw. with temperature the harness was less or more flexible and could have been grounding out the sensors and sending false signals to the ecm. IE.. false IAT, false TPS, False O2, false ET, all of which control haw the engine wants to run.. rich or lean, mine was everywhere.

after i fixed all my bare spots (which were EVERYWHERE, over 20 spots in all) got it all sealed up and back together. running great

may not be the problem... but it may be worth looking at.. best of luck to you and hope you get it solved quickly, welcome to the forum and ride safe!

Ah man .... that wiring harness looked like a nightmare !! ... I had a few spots on my 954RR's wiring harness that were giving me problems ... I just went ahead and found myself a new wiring harness off of Fleabay and slapped it on ... I hate working with wiring issues ... HATE!!

Damn. I dont have the means to inspect the harness thoroughly. I really hope thats not the issue. I cleaned the old sensor up and put it back in and did another reset but nothing. It turns over once and pops at the intake. Im botching the TPS somehow. Every time I hit the reset TPS button I have to hit the Keys icon again or I get no input from the throttle. Is that normal? Is it possible my ECM is bad?

a cheap inspection mirror and a flashlight is what i used.. was able to get in most all the nooks and crannies on the Ss and was able to spot the rub spots as they were through the cloth tape stuff.. also harsh bends or kinks in the wires and looking at the wires that are loose enough to allow movement.
