I'm going to skip gear because I think every rider should have it before riding, but also because gear is a preference some guys don't want anything between them and the open road. (even if they may fall on it)

properly setup the suspension
my bike was not set up for me when I test rode it or bought it, after I set it up the first weekend I had it I could have sworn it was a whole new bike, WAY better.
best of all its FREE
then buy tires and brakes you like and can trust, doesn't matter what brand you choose just so long as they give you confidence and grip. (if you like the tires and brakes that are on it consider it done, no need to fix what isn't broke)
next put in a oil you trust, again brand is not that important just make sure what you put in the primary is compatible with a wet clutch.
