I'm going to skip gear because I think every rider should have it before riding, but also because gear is a preference some guys don't want anything between them and the open road. (even if they may fall on it)

so First, always first

properly setup the suspension

my bike was not set up for me when I test rode it or bought it, after I set it up the first weekend I had it I could have sworn it was a whole new bike, WAY better.
best of all its FREE

then buy tires and brakes you like and can trust, doesn't matter what brand you choose just so long as they give you confidence and grip. (if you like the tires and brakes that are on it consider it done, no need to fix what isn't broke)

next put in a oil you trust, again brand is not that important just make sure what you put in the primary is compatible with a wet clutch.

Mar,
Saftey first--> Gear.

Mods
Ask yourself performance or comfort I choose both.

Comfort:
Seat, Suspension, Tires, buffeting, Noise, Foot peg*drop*, Levers...

Performance basic:
K&N, Rebreather, ECM, exhaust, Plugs.

Now on the Delete air box im still not sure, I have not deleted mine but have one cut up to install. I have made some changes to my air box before I received my air box to cut up. In the front where the screen is by the gas cap, I drilled some holes where I marked every hole with a pen, same size as screen. Since I did this it runs just fine with all the above. Deleting the air box will get loud! I dont want to use ear plugs, and with this config I dont need them.

Put that delete on and ya I want plugs for the ride.

Welcome my Buell brother!

That's like saying "check your air pressure after you buying it". It's kindof a given.

It's funny where this has went. Tail chop? come on guys! Are you trying to make this guy not come back? HE HAS A XB12R. And he asked for first mods, not safety advice.

Come on guy's let's raise the bar here. Less BS

you are right everybody knows to set up a bikes suspension
no such thing as new riders here right?
or riders that came from bikes without adjustable suspensions?

sorry I guess I forgot everybody was so experienced once they started riding a Buell
raspberries to you sir :p

lol

sometimes basics are forgotten or overlooked, I figure cover it all and if its a repeat it only takes a second to skip over my redundant post, but for anybody that doesn't know (be it the OP or anybody else that may read the thread) it may turn on a light bulb or hopefully save somebody a headache.
that and the short XB's seem to be hyper critical when it comes to suspension setup. my buddies 636 isn't nearly as picky (but it doesn't handle like an XB either ;))

I don't know everybody's skill level so I start at basic and work my way up from there until it gets to the point where I'm[confused] then I just hope somebody who knows more than me can step in.

I would honestly start with the basic stuff to, plugs/wires, oil change in both holes, suspension setup, and a nice set of tires, go over the whole bike and check for any loose nuts and bolts! Lock tite everything!, check your fork seals, basically just check over the entire bike. You don't who has been there and been working on it, yakno better safe then sorry!

If you are looking for performance mods... I recommend a pipe, filter, and ECM. I would recommend the Buell Race pipe if you can get your hands on one. They arent made anymore, so it may be difficult, otherwise, ask around here for best pipe for performance. www.ebracing.com should have an ECM for you, and I highly recommend a K&N filter. also, the breather re-route seems to be popular.

as for cosmetic mods...it is really dependent on your style. For me, fender eliminator/ tail chop, LED brake lights/integrated signals, billet rear brake and shifter , new clutch and front brake levers (my pref is Pazzo).

just a few to get you started

i already have great saftey gear this isnt my first bike just my buell i appreciate all your concern and all the info thanks for the great ideas

I am going to skip saying what mods to do first or any of that ,

and instead tell you and any other new buellers and some other long time buellers on here to read all these links and all the other great info on BUELLXB.com before moving on to doing mods and questions that have a thread already. there is a ton of info if you just do a search & look for it and take look at each section and read it. the sticky's are stickied for a reason . you can also do a google search for threads in BuellXB.com.

Welcom to BUELL. The first thing I did was remove those naff reflectors on the fork legs and near the tail light. Next remove the lifting pegs if you don't have a ride mate. Belt guard can come off too if you like, just check the threads wrt pros and cons. The above mods cost nothing and make the bike lighter and sleeker. Ride on - smooth shiny bits up and sticky rubber bits down - enjoy.

If I'm not assuming you adjusted the suspension, I would agree with the people that suggested that and the breather mod. They made the most difference with my bike in getting it to a consistent base level of smooth riding. I would think you'd want that before changing something.
Tuning is up next for me...

I didnt know how to set up the suspension until last month and I have had the bike since summer. I was to busy putting 3800 Miles on!!! Rep point go's to delta[up][up][up] I can wait to try out the suspension now.

Thanks Jobe zeebuh

But I have to warn you, it will strengthen your addiction even more! ;)
Also fine tune it to your liking, use the manual more like a guideline.

Yeah. I noticed it was a little bouncy at first. Didnt even know it had adjustable suspension. LOL! Brought Xb9r in for the winter to Mod. I was on ramp 2 and I weigh 210. LOL! I am on ramp 5 now. Spent 40 hrs modding my bike! Now spring needs to break! Damn it!!! :p
