I just bought a 06 XB9SX with 7,800 miles on it.Took the bike out yesterday for two short rides and it ran flawlessly.Took it today and it shut off on me twice, once as I was leaving and then again as I was leaving after getting gas.The bike runs perfect otherwise. The bike starts right up,idles perfectly.Put in gear though and it will run but then shuts off and the gauge needles sing back and forth.Im at a loss here, anybody have an idea as t what is going on? Thanks

several possible culprits so read the below....perform the steps provided.....and REPORT BACK with results. doing this not only pleases me but helps most all other board members.

1-cityX models fairly bomb-proof. you did NOT state how far the bike "runs" till it shuts down. anytime a shut-down OR start-up problem coincides with the sweeping of the needles on the gauge cluster it is almost always a battery issue.
2-fully charge the battery with a quality charger and have it load tested. if questionable replace. install same and thoroughly clean not only the terminals but the cable ends. install cable ends and tighten. DO NOT CROSS THE CABLES. incredibly expensive damage results from same.
3-during these episodes did you experience a CEL? buell acronym for "check engine light". if so you'll need to access the diagnostics plug under the seat and read any stored fault codes.
4-under your seat in vicinity of battery is a component marked BAS and UP. plastic and approx. the size of your thumb. it is the bank angle sensor. your symptoms mirror a faulty BAS. bike starts perfectly...idles perfectly...goes in gear perfectly....travels a few feet and shuts down EQUALS faulty BAS

Thank you sir, I appreciate the reply.I will look in to those thing and let you know what I come up with.

always my pleasure. accessing your ecm via the onboard under-seat diagnostics plug will also clue you in on what the culprit might be and historical info on the reason the events occurred. you can use either software and computer to run diagnostics or the "jumper wire" method that at least allows you to read any stored fault codes in an analog "blinking light" method but does not have a provision for clearing any identified codes. if you get to the point you want to try the jumper wire method will send you all the instructions and codes.
