So I noticed I can't start my bike in gear (2009 XB12Scg)... Is this common? I was sure I was able to do this before I took my bike in for the break in maint. inspection and yes I have the kick stand up the bike in gear and the clutch and brake engaged. this is kind of troublesome considering I am new and I do stall out once and awhile ( put the bike in neutral, turn the bike on, go back in gear and take off.) anyone have info on this?

You may be one of the only ones with an actual functioning sensor. I know that 98% of us can ride with our kickstand down, so the sensors do fail a lot.

My 09 doesn't have a stand sensor at all. Am I missing something. It will start in gear with the clutch in.

My 06 never had a sensor. Always thought that was strange. Took me a wile to learn get used to it, I rode a few times with the stand down and almost put it down in a parking lot once.

Dave is corrcet... They all have sensors (kick stand and neutral) my neut. hasent worked in about 3 years and I just notced the other day that I can ride it with the kick stand down now... Never could before!

only the '03 models had kickstand sensors, my '05 didnt. i think '04 and later got the spring-loaded stand and no sensor.

The are no sensors on 07's thats for sure... there isn't a hint of a wired connection below the engine. The side stand is as basic as a bicycles. you probably don't have a sensor. as for the Nuch/clutch sensor, i think you will know pretty darn quick if you are trying to start your bike with it in gear, and you will probably only do it once or twice before you learn to stop embarrassing yourself.

Joser, i highly recommend you get a couple of figurative teeth pulled and call the stealership. your bike should start with the clutch in, in gear. Very dangerous for you as you know

yes I am aware I was just concerned about the whole stall thing it could end up dangerous on an incline or with traffic behind me. thanks to everyone for you input.

strange thing - on my old xb9s ('03) i definately had this sidestand sensor - the engine was shut down immideately if the sidestand is in "parking" position & 1st gear turned on. exactly at the moment of gear swith. should check it on my '08 stt. for no reason shure it shoul be tha same way & will be surprised if not so.

'08 XB12R, Iv always been able to change gears with the kickstand down, and start in gear if I wanted. A big change from my old Yamaha.

I've done the, "Ohh, these people are waving at me, that's cool. I'll wave back."

Then it turns out my kickstand was down and I feel like an idiot.

Joser- there should be a switch that the clutch lever engages to let you start in gear. If the dealer adjusted the clutch they may have knocked it out of position.

and no the later bikes don't have the kickstand down switch. One can ride off with the KS down. The newer style KS is supposed to be easier to knock up if you make that mistake.

i have an xb9s 03 and it has the kickstand sensor.when i put it in neutral & with the bike running ,put the kickstand down the bike shuts off.lol not a big deal though.

I'm so lost why would you want to start in gear?? i left my bike in gear one time when i first got her. went for a ride parked next to my buddies $30,000 custom V-Rod. . . went to start and didn't have the clutch all the way in and she jumped right for his bike. oddly, i was standing beside her and with clutch hand only caught her, held her up, and stabilized her with out any damage to anyone. my friends and i decided that if they hadn't seen it they would of never believed it. either way short story long. . . why would you start her in gear? i under stand parking on a hill but why not just throw into neutral with your hand on the brake?

^^^^ I don't think your sensor works properly though. I have the same bike and if it's in N and I put the kickstand down it still runs but... with the kick stand down in N if you put it in gear it shuts off - that's how it should be I think.
