So lets start at the beginning. I own a 2009 Buell Xb12Ss and just purchased a race can, K&N and race ECU. Installed everything did the TPS reset and it runs awsome! There is no more hesitation when leaving from a dead stop and it feel very strong all the way through the RPM range. There IS poping on high RPM decel but I think that is due to the ECU and the added fuel(Let me know if it should not be doing that). Now to the problem, When I installed the race can I did not notice the exhaust tip was resting against the tension pully, BIG problem. I did the TPS reset and took it for a spin. About a block from my house the bike dies, I restart put it in gear and it dies again. So I pull over and take a look, the belt is shredded ( due to the fact the pully is stuck, cooked the belt and it broke). So now I ordered a new belt and pully( pully because there is a HUGE gouge in it from the belt). I have a couple of questions I hope ya"ll can awnser for me.
1. I need to remove the pully that is connected to the motor to clean off all the old belt that is stuck between the pully and motor. Any tips of hints(torque specs for reinstall, lock-tite,ect...) or is it pretty strait forward?
2. Is there a shim or something I need so the muffler does not rest on the pully?
3. How to remove the rear tire? I will do a search in a little while, again just looking for tips and hints to make it easyer.
I can't think of anything else off the top of my head (at work now and wont be off till 5am) so anything you guys can throw at me would be great. Thanks in advance for the help.

Here is a video of me when I needed to pull my tires off and replace the rubber.

Tire Removal DIY

Hopefully this will help with the tires and the pulley. Sure someone will chime in and help out with muffler issue.

Cheers!

I have a 2006 XB12Ss with a race muffler. Pulley and muffler tip are close, but have never touched. I would start by loosening all mounting bolts and see the muffler will shift around a little bit, make sure everything is seated correctly.

By the way, you don't need to remove the rear tire to change the belt or pulley. Just remove the pitch bolt, loosen the rear axle and there will be enough play to remove both. Then remove the two nuts seen right under the brake lever to remove the pulley assembly.

Did you follow the service manual? There is a specific procedure with torque specs and certain sequenced for installing the muffler. I'm thinking maybe you did it whilly nilly and the muffler wasn't aligned correctly. I can't imagine why else it would have rubbed the pulley.

06xbss, I will losen up everything, pretty sure everthing is where it should be as the muffler is centered on the moon looking bracket. I might had just tightened it up too much. I will be removing the rear wheel because the tire leaks and is close to being wore out so I will be getting a new one.

snrusnak, your are correct I did just whilly nilly it as you put it. Hopfully I learn my lesson after this $300 dollar mistake. I fully expected to get bashed a bit for this, lesson learned the hard way

ya not at all bashing just trying to help.....[up]

we have a pretty nice and kind community here.....sarcastic as hell but helpful lol

snrusnak, yeah I love the help one can get from the other members that have been there and done that, the sarcasim is just an added bonus

08herobolt, I love the experience just wish it didnt cost so damn much.LOL

The race can you have is probably for xb9, they were shorter and work fine on the 9, but when installed on a 12, the can tip will rub the tensioner, I had the same issue as the can i have is for an 03 model. I simply put a small dent in the tip to allow clearance for the pulley.

Ill search for a link to article covering this scenario

I had the same problem...like bad web says I took a ball peen hammer put the ball side on where it rubbed smack it with another hammer that way u don't miss the mark and if u have to hit it a few times it will be in the same spot not just a bunch of hammer dents.. wear glasses with good hammers I have heard they explode when u hit face to face. Never seen it and myth busters did it and never got an exploding hammer but be safe

to do tensioner or brake work on rear wheel (non-Ulysses) simply remove 3 screws on right side of cowling, remove 3 screws on front pulley cover, remove rear axle pinch cap bolt, loosen rear axle PRECISELY 20 turns, remove pair of 9/16th pulley tensioner nuts and flat washers, remove pulley and go to town. to replace belt use same sequence, remove the 3 3/16th inch allen bolts for right side riders peg mount bracket, and remove swingarm bridge. replace belt. reverse entire sequence to reassemble. torque axle to approx. 45 ft.lbs torque when finished. then roll bike across shop floor and watch new belt to make sure it tracks properly on rear pulley and tensioner pulley. a fresh belt is EXTREMELY tight when installed from new. i have posted info on here before on how to properly bed in a new belt.
