Oh no 1125 :(

Help Support Buellxb Forum:

Ok so I've been reading alot. How hard is it to remove the stator/rotor and reinstall a new set? I've found an 08 stator and rotor as well as an 09 stator that I would just buy the EBR rotor fix for. How big of a job are we talking here?

^^Not very difficult at all, just time consuming. I've done one on my Aprilia, and will probably have to do my 1125 at some point...

Wow after reading about all of these, I think I'll move the rotor w/ EDM hole to the top of my "to get" list... I have a couple more years of warranty on my bike, but I try to avoid problems when I can :/

@ GAXB9R:

I'm a mechanical engineering grad student, and I've been brainstorming about using a MEMS array to fabricate a compact, high reliability stator (specifically for my '09 R, ha ha!). Even if I had access to a generous venture capitalist, and maybe an electrical engineer to collaborate with, it'd take a few years.

Until then, I guess an '08 stator and EBR rotor are as good as it gets.

I was on the phone with Powder Keg HD in Mason, OH the other day and they said they have a few stators lying around in the back if you are looking to pick one up. Might want to look into getting one if you have an 2009+ 1125 pre-stator issue as they are apparently becoming more difficult to find.

Update: back up and running rewound stator and new EBR rotor. Running 100% I lovę it, never even worry about volts anymore.

Good to hear that you're up and running again! Did you have to use a hub puller to get the old rotor off?

(trying to get together everything I need before I tackle this job in my apartment parking lot :D)

No I did not need a hub puller. I actually did the whole job in my garage. No lifts, stands or anything all the work was done on the sidestand. Of course I had help to tip the bike up when needed, I would advise spending the cash for a stand at least. this job SUCKED without it. I replaced my rotor, and had my stator rewound by Ricks Electric. I didnt need heat or anything to get the rotor nut off. The only thing I would say is that without stands or anything you will need a helping hand or two. Just to hold it up and hold it down when working on it. I also made a list of parts and money ect. It helped alot to plan it all out. Definetly read up on it through the threads here and on Badweb. Plenty of guys have done the job, and trust me after all the work is done and you never really worry about volts again it will make you fall in love with your bike all over again!

OK, I'll invest in a stand before I tackle this... Thanks for the heads up!

Did you come across any threads that had pictures with the step by step process? I've done quite a bit of looking, but haven't found one if it's out there. I've got the manual, and I've done quite a bit of wrenching on cars, but I don't quite have a warm fuzzy feeling about this yet.

So I just had my second stator blow on my 08 Uly 30k miles. So the xb's are not immune to this problem. Same issue, overheated stator, top coils burnt.
ASB has them for 119. so cost is not prohibitive but annoying still to fix.
Now I am looking at drilling my rotor to prevent this. Anyone else been thru this for the XB's?

Does anyone know how to disconnect stator by unplugging vs. by cutting off the wiring? I have problem figuring out how to remove little plastic cover from the harness (it seam like you have to drop the motor down in order to access the allen bolt that holds it in place) and how to unplug the wiring going to the stator. I searched and searched however no treads show this step of the removal. I appreciate any input, tnx

p.s. to othe Buellers looking for tips:
1. use rear wheel stand
2. shift tranny into 6th gear (tnx Gregory Hildstrom)
3. 300 ft-lbs impact gun (DeWalt 059 will do Craftsman will not) and 32mm socket can be rented from VatoZone
4. dont cut metal clip holding the wiring inside of the stator cover
5. no need for cylinder locking tool
6. no need for puller - rotor comes right off
7. use gloves - dont get cut

Yes! You are not banging on the bearings you are banging on the crank nut it does not affect the bearings in the negative way - impact gun will try to turn the crank however since you are in the sixth gear it will unbolt the rotor nut before it spins the crank

I wouldnt use a gun on the rotor nut, a breaker bar to remove it and a torque wrench that goes up to 300ft.lbs to install it, and the recommended locktite.
