Oil light on but oil tank and primary full

Hey, I recently bought a 2003 XBR9 and the previous owner had drained the oil and gas for shipping. I put a new quart of oil in the primary, and tried to put 2.5 quarts in the swingarm, but it was full after i put in one quart.(maybe he only drained the primary?) The check oil light turns on when I turn the key for more than eight seconds, but turns off and stays off when I start the engine. The engine sounds normal, and the bike runs fine. What should I do about this? I'm going to get the oil changed and see if that fixes it, but why do you think the oil light is doing this?

its like your check engine in your car...when you turn the key its on for a sec then off... But an oil change and new filter to be sure.

the po probably didn't take the oil filter off & let it drain, i would start over with a complete engine oil change & filter. the light is normal when you first turn the key on.

The oil pressure switch is likely faulty.

when the bike is not running there is no oil pressure.
so the light should be on.then turn off within a few seconds of when it starts.

I changed the oil today, and it fixed the problem. Thanks for the help everyone!
