Ok. So I have pulled off my exhaust to send out to Hawk and I figured while I'm at it, I might was well drop the oil pump and check the drive gear. I pulled all 4 screws from the bottom of the pump and realized all the internals come out. Nothing really came apart though so I can get them all back in, but I cant seem to get the body off so I can see the gear. The oil pump body with the shaft and the top gear are stuck to the engine. Is there a gasket in there that could be holding it? Should I just take a hammer and a flat head screw driver to it and pop it off? Help a brother out!!

What is the problem with yours? Sorry I'm just not familiar with this issue...or where the pump is at on the engine.

It was just sealed on with the gasket. I grew some balls and got a chisel in there and it popped off pretty easily. And the good news is that the gear is in pretty good shape.

you have to pull the cam cover to replace the gear, pulling the oil pump just lets you check the condition of the current gear

Wolfo68 is right. Pulling the oil pump is the best way to check the possibly faulty gear. Mine looked good still but I will more than likely be replacing it sometime soon to prevent more problems. Just gives some piece of mind to check it.

What is the issue with the gear, is it common to fail? Is it certain years? I'm not familiar with this issue...

there was an upgrade to a different material for reliability the older engines. the newer ones came with the upgraded gear

Ok thanks. Do you know what year it was changed? Don't want to lose oil pressure while riding! Mine's an 05

you have the old gear unless someone changed it already. the older material was prone to stress fractures. and you could also bypass it with an electric oil pump, I know it's doable just haven't tried it myself.

Thanks for the info, I should look into this, the bike runs great now and has low miles, I don't want to burn it up...

no problem, I just don't want anyone else to experience my catastrophe from this spring

Im curious where i can buy tge camshaft locking tool? Ive looked online and cant find it. Thanks in advance

I'll look it up, I don't remeber where I got it right off hand but if you want to rent it from me instead of spending the money send me a pm sometime

here ya go bud

I believe this was the best deal I found on it after scouring everywhere, then finding a piece that was equivalent. others were up around 130ish and everywhere in between.

Thanks wolf. Basicly i did an oil change and put my bike away for the season. My bike just rolled over 5k miles. My plan is actually next winter to replace the oil gear. So if you can find a cam tool pm me i'll be looking too, and if no luck i will look you up next year and would gladly rent yours.
