2005 XB9SX 12,XXX miles. Owned since 9,XXX miles. Only mod is Jardine (which has blown out packing). I have a Hawk sitting in the garage I am waiting to put on.

Problem:

For the last month I have been trying to track down this issue. When warming up it runs at 800-900rpm and then will dip down to 400-500. It will rev up and down and then eventually stall unless you give it some gas. Once its warmed up it runs more normal. Occasionally it will hiccup at WOT, happens more frequently when its hot. Once it gets hot it will want to stall at every stop light.

Starting 2 weeks ago it would not fire up in the morning. To get it to start I have to pump the throttle while starting. If it only sits for a few hours it starts without pumping the gas. Any longer than 6 hours and it needs the throttle pump.

Starting 3 days ago I turned the key and I didnt get any needle bounce. Sometimes they both bounce, sometimes only the RPM bounces, sometimes they bounce out of sync. This morning they didnt bounce at all and the RPM needle started working 2 seconds after the bike started. In the video after the bike stalls I show how just the RPM needle is working.

Things I have done to remedy:

I have replaced plugs, changed the oil, and inspected spark plug wires. I took the fuel pump out and cleaned it with parts cleaner, put it back in and ran Lucas oil fuel system cleaner with a full tank of 91 octane. I also had the battery disconnected for a few hours working on things, and did a TPS reset.

I was about to go buy a fuel pump this week, but with the new issue with the gauges I am wondering if its electrical/computer issue.

This is a video from this morning after a cold start warming it up. I have had it plugged into ECMSpy recently and no codes/no check engine light.

With the exception of the needle sweep issue, I would replace the IAT. I did any my little nuance problems went away. As far as the hiccup...tune it. If it has the Jardine, it needs to be tuned at least a little.

For the needle sweep issues, check your grounds, and make sure the battery leads are tight.

His bike was running like 104 percent afr so not overly lean. But a race tune would probably go well with his new hawk

as for rough starting i had the same problem and i fixed it by cleaning the intake valve. it had carbon and gunk build up and would not allow it to close all the way and would not let all the air it want in. i used some qtips and carb cleaner and cleaned it up then re did a tps reset since now it would close all the way and BINGO problem solved, as for your indicators i would check all the grounds, and then check your charging system make sure it reads above 13v with the bike running and if thats good then get your battery tested. good luck

Just want to say that squidbuellie is the man.

He worked on it for 2 days, swapped different ecm and intake, checked grounds. Ended up replacing plugs, wires, and coil to fix it. He even sent me home with one of his XB9s as a loaner because we didnt get it the first day. Not many people that would hand out a bike to a stranger and help them fix it like he did.

+1 to squidbuellie for all the help.
