hey guys, i have a question. my oil is about an 1/8" to a 1/16" overfilled, i'm hoping it will still be fine to ride like that right?

before i added the oil, it wasnt registering on the dipstick, so i had mobil 1 from my other bike, vtwin 20w50 and added that until i can do the oil change.

My question is mainly, i'll be fine right?

ya you will be fine, as long as it did not do any damage before you added oil but i bet you will be good just do an oil change soon!!!!

i sure hope it didnt do any damage. was about a quart low, unfortunately wasnt registering on the dipstick.

You are f#$ked! Sell the bike to me for $500!

Just kidding bro, you are totally fine!:D

the xb are certainly the most finicky machine to get a good reading on the oil level. The closer I get to follow the 2010 shop manual the better and more consistent reading I get. when you roll in to get gas put bike on side stand on level surface.Let run one minute. shut motor off and check oil. If I waited even a couple minutes It is as much as almost half of the safe area on stick variations.I guess it's leaking back into the motor.I have checked it on vacation while hi speed driving at every gas fill up..I have used about 10 oz or less in 5000 miles. I keep my level little bit more than middle to 3/4 of safe level. I don't add till it's almost on the add mark. note that is on a hot motor

yeah it was low, i just checked it after a 25 minute ride to work, its a little ovefilled now, but it ran fine.

lol thanks for the help guys, just wantedto make sure my laziness/lack of knowledge on what to check it didnt fook me. (just d/l'ed the service manual)

would it hurt anything to highly overfill?? afterall, it's just a holding tank for the oil pump... in engines without an oil pump, there is a higher risk of the oil "foaming" if it is overfilled... but in the XB, it should be fine? I overfilled mine about a half-quart, I think the only result is that with more oil, it won;t need to be changed as often...

overfilling can do funny things with the pressure in the various lines and jets throughout the engine, but generally a small overfill will do no damage

the 2008 and later model years have larger oil lines in the cases and a different pump, they are a fair bit more resistant to oil related damage in every way (under and over filled)

yeah, well i drained the oil and put regular castrol 20w50 in it with a mobil 1 filter. oil was supposively changed, but no dice on that one. oil was black as hell, so my cousin has to kick the guys ass who charged him for it lol. thanks for the advice guys.

I performed a oil change on my 08 xb12scg about a month ago. Filled, as the manual states, the 2,5 quarts. Fired the bike up, warmed it up and checked the dipstick. According to the dipstick reading i was just barely within the safe area. What !?!?! Does it hold 2,5 quarts or is it a trick to getting a good reading for the oil level. Anyone??

If you didn't fill the oil filter upon replacement, you lost 4 ounces on the dipstick right off the bat.

The filter was filled. About 3/4 full. Plus I have no leaks. I remember there was a thread about this but i can't find it.

The main thing is to check it on level ground while it is hot. Ride till you reach normal operating temperature and then check - immediately. If possible use a motorcycle table or lift, makes it less sketchy than using the side stand with something underneath it.

The trick I use is to keep 2 small plastic 70cl bottles of oil umder my seat.
As I find it far too difficult to fill the correct amount with a 1 liter bottle.

This way, when I check my oil level I can fill it up with the exact amount needed (dipstick indicates 150ml or 1/4" between lower and top level).

It also saves me from having to carry a 1 liter bottle after having to buy it at the petrol station.

I would be happy if the oil producers would sell 150ml tubes of oil in their petrol stations. It would save a lot of spilling. Here in Spain they do sell them for 2-stroke bikes. These tubes make filling easy.

When i first got my 08 lightning,I was real carefull to put only 2.5 recomended qts in.Soon I noticed between the inconsistant readings and oil comsumption while breaking in,there wasnt too much piece of mind with the dipstick method. so now I only top off the oil at peek operating temp, at the max level,I use a make shift funnel and top the oil to the the middle of the smooth area just below the threads, this puts the oil level about 1/4''above the top mark on the dip stick. The volume of oil is closer to 3qts than 2.5 and in 19,000 miles had no problem with oil in my intake,or any other problems associated w/ over filled oil. This has to be done right at the end of your ride when your oil is fully expanded and you shouldnt have a problem,at least i havnt.
