Well I hooked my bike up to ECM spy to test the "no spark" issue I had been getting earlier and now I'm getting spark in both the front and rear coil.

I'm starting to think I fried my ECM, Here are my symptoms...

1) When i turn the key on, Fuel Pump primes sometimes, sometimes does not
2) Idiot lights on speedo come up one time, I turn ignition off then back on and only the nuetral light shows
3) Sometimes I turn ignition on and fuel pump doesnt prime at all and its as though theres a faulty connection on the starter button (I can hit it a dozen times and nothing happens)

It seems like when it comes to turning the ignition on and off, I cant get consistent results at all when it comes to Idiot lights on speedo, fuel pump priming, and sometimes even starter even working.

On ECM spy I have no trouble codes at all, even though my speedo is lite up like a christmas tree. When I run a diagnostic test on ecm spy, all of the items I can test come up ok.

The current ecm was a replacement ECM (Part #'s matching) that WAS WORKING for one afternoon and then wouldnt start once I put the airbox back on.

I have done a proper tps reset. I even took the airbox off, backed the screw off the butterfly completely, hit TPS reset, then tightened the screw until my tps read 5.5.

Any educated suggestions?

did you have your front pulley cover off recently at all? i had a very similar problem which ended up being a loose connect/pinched wire under that pulley cover.

Yes I took the pulley cover off, but only after the bike wouldnt start. I have checked all the ground wires behind the front pulley cover and they are all in tact. I degreased all the connections as well and reconnect them.

Im at the point where I want to take a hammer to the bike because one minute I'm all excited about getting it running and the next day its giving me all these problems and wont even start.

Ahhh What am I doing wrong guys? [confused]

Does not sound like an ECM problem to me...what exactly did you do to the bike before it had this problem? Did it have ANY of these problems at all before? Need more info to help...

Sounds like a grounding issue to me... Bad electrical paths can cause some weird stuff to happen. Check all of your ground connections. At the battery, and underneath the front fairing especially.

+1 on grounding, or perhaps a problem with the kill switch.

How would I go about locating the ground wires on the front end?

The bike was wrecked and the entire front end (wires and whatnot) have been hanging because the front fairing support is broke in half.

The original ECU was cracked so I purchased another (part #'s matching). After I put on the ecm I drained the fuel, changed the oil and tranny fluid, replaced and gapped new spark plugs and cranked the motor. The bike started but was idling rough. I hooked it up to ECM spy and did a correct tps reset (With the upper and lower airbox off because I backed the screw completely off the butterfly). After I got the bike idling like I wanted it to, I placed all the bodywork back on and put the hanging electrical wires infront of the forks into a "wad" and bungied them to the front forks (in hopes to do a quick test drive around the block).

I went to start the motor and it would crank but not start. I then unbundled the electrical wire "wad" and checked the fuses, all were in tact.

I then decided to try to diagnose the issue with ECM spy, I have no trouble codes and everything seems to pass the diagnostic test.....

thanks for any futher imput, I feel like I'm close but the electrical system just seems to be going bizurk!

Wow. It definitly soulds like you got something going on in the front. That kind of oinfo is very helpful from the get go next time in helping you diagnose. I would "unwad" everything and seperate all that I could. Check it again and see if if fires up. If not, you will need to wiggle, inspect, and trace each section for a problem or it starts. You will have to do this one at a time to narrow it down. It is time consuming and aggrivating, but that is the down side to getting a deal on a wreck. There is usually other issues that you find on after correcting the obvious ones. Keep us updated on what you find or do.

Does anyone know whether or not the speedometer needs to be hooked up to start the bike?

Also how would you recommend going through the wires at the front end? Unconnecting and then reconnecting everything?

Personally I think you just need to look for any weird chaffing in the wires, make sure you don't have any bare wire exposed. Also, when you bound everything into a "Wad" you could have accidently pulled a wire from one of the connections.

As far as the grounds go - You have one under your airbox, it's a steel cable that goes from left to right. Right side is attached to the frame, and the left side is attached to a Y-Bracket that goes down to your heads.
There's another steel strap in the front of the bike that runs left to right. Left is connected to your Y-Frame (Oil Cooler mount) and the right is connected to the case of your motor.

You also have a ground under your seat off the battery.

Not sure about the 'bolts, but my Uly has a system ground (copper cable with a ring terminal) up front that is screwed into the chassis. I'd be looking for that one...

*Update

I unconnected and then reconnected all the wires at the front end, turn out she STARTED UP!!!!

I want to thank everyone who has taken the time and effort to read my previous threads and help me out. I owe you guys BIG TIME!

Thanks-- Jason

If that's all it took, it may just be a band-aid. Need to check your connectors, the pin conditions, and wires. You don't want it coming back on you later.
